In another thread I'm sure I saw one or two people mention that they live in Cleveland, but I can't recall the thread or the members' names, so I will just toss this out there. Need some local knowledge.

I've been trying to find the grave of an ancestor for awhile, and I narrowed his burial down to St. John Cemetery on Woodland.

I was there on a Saturday morning a couple of weeks ago. I was the only person in the graveyard, unsurprisingly, and given that it was a cold January morning I saw very few other people around. Unfortunately too much of the ground was snow-covered and I was not able to find the stone I'm looking for.

I mean to return this spring after the thaw. A few people have told me anecdotally that this is not a safe area. Based on what I saw when I was there I could buy that. But I'd like to have a local's take on it so I can plan out how I want to approach this.

I wouldn't worry about it. Check it out around mid-morning and make sure you stop by Case Western Reserve University and check out some of the cool museums and exhibits. Just a mile or two up the road from the cemetery.

I'm not a Cleveland native but I've been here long enough to know a thing or two. Feel free to PM me.

Heh...I was about to post the same thing. My wifes family has lived in Cleveland for a very long time and all of them have migrated over to the west side. Except her 80+ year old grandmother. She refuses to leave the east side of town because she has lived there her whole life.

Thanks for the tips. Yeah it will definitely be mid-morning, probably on a Saturday since it's a 6 hour drive or so for me.

@brainmanahan, he's not on Find-a-grave, although quite a few burials from that graveyard are. The stone may be overgrown, or it may have disintegrated. I plan to also visit the office of Calvary Cemetery on Miles, where the burial records for St. John are.
 
Cemeteries are not typically a location where criminals look to find possible targets. That being said, I've spent a little bit of time on the East side of Cleveland. I was not too worried, but I work in Detroit, so... 😉.

While you are there go visit Slymans! It's just a few miles away.
 
Thanks for the additional tips. Yeah it will be daylight. I'm not the skittish type, but I ain't nuts either. The cemetery is bounded by a large housing project, behind which is a big vacant and overgrown lot, and then the railroad tracks south of that. So there's enough reason to be alert, anyway.
