The specks on an Intel motherboard says that - if needed - the board supports ECC RDram.

Is there an advantage to having ECC ram vs. non ECC ram?

Yeah ECC is Error Checking and correction. However, modern RAM is very reliable anyway. The chances of an error are minute, so the benefit offered by ECC is very small these days. However, if stability is more important to your system than just getting you annoyed if it crashes - such as if it's controlling some real time system and simply can't afford to crash, then that's when ECC becomes worthwhile.
