Who knows a lot about bigscreen TVs? I have a problem.

My Toshiba 50A60 is showing green when it should be showing black, and the green level changes/flickers every few seconds.
Here's what happened:
I'm watching Das Boot: Director's Cut and the screen starts flickering green. It's a very dark movie, and I'm thinking, 'Wow, what a crappy transfer... they didn't even set their color levels right through the movie.' Then I notice that the green is also affecting the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. When I finish the movie and hit stop, I notice that my normally grey DVD menu backgrown is decidedly greenish. I flip in another DVD - Jurassic Park - and start the movie. The entire opening credits are on a green background. This green background increases and decreases in intensitiy... it keeps jumping to different intensities at random. Switched video mode to VCR - same thing. Watching TV now, everything has a green hue.

So this is my first projection TV and I'm guessing that the green gun is going crazy. Can anyone tell me more specifically what is going on? We have the Best Buy warranty on the TV (it's just 3 months old), but I'm not sure if the technician will be knowledgeable or not. Can anyone tell me what is going on?

I've posted to a couple HT sites, but this site usually has the best turnaround time and yes, I am getting freaked out.

HELP!!

My bigscreen has a menu in it that lets you manually adjust the guns... your may have it too. Try playing around with the green centering and you may be able to fix it.

It's not centering.. it's that the _whole screen_ has too much green. If that green level were stable, I might be able to adjust, but it changes at random.

One of 2 things.

1. Somehow the setting for green has gone out of whack. Buy Video Essentials or Avia DVD to calibrate.

2. The green gun is going bad. Might need replaced.

Look into getting your big screen professionally calibrated -- it sounds like something may have gone bad in your TV and may need replacing. Other than that, try out "Avia's Guide to Home Theater". It will help you adjust colors, hue, brightness, etc to a "normal" tone. Most TVs that are out of the box don't have the correct color tones, but with this DVD, it will help make them more even.

Doesn't that TV have a 2 year in-home warranty or something like that?

It just sound like your TV is in need of repair;possibly replacement of the gun. I doubt that Avia or anything else for that matter will fix it without professional repair....as for the Best Buy techs, they seem very knowledgable to me from the times they have come out to adjust my bigscreen....

This is most definitely a malfunction error. Have someone come out and check it, there isn't anything you can do to fix it yourself.

Great, I will have to call Best Buy then and get them out. I am glad that they are knowledgeable.

I've used AVIA before to calibrate it; now all of the settings are green in my "calibrated" mode. I thought about recalibrating everything again and when I had it set right for the DVD, everything else was still way off. Then I thought it might not be a great idea to lose all of my "calibrated" settings because then I wouldn't know if the TV was fixed or not! Clearly, the green level should not change on its own and so that needs to be fixed. But if I try to reset all of the video modes to look normal, the repair guy may say "Oops, looks fine, I do't need to do anything." Whaddaya think?

(This forum is the BEST! I post on newsgroups and home theater sites and here (just for kicks) and I end up getting lots of replies on here from people who know what's going on in just a few minutes. The other sites - nothing. Thanks, everyone!)

Of course you should try to reset your settings before calling anyone first, but I can tell you from about 2 years of experience with electronics (including big screens) that isn't just a minor problem. Either a gun is going out, or there's a problem somewhere internally with the TV's electrical operation. Either way, the TV is going to have to be opened up, which I don't recommend you doing.

Reset your settings, then once you've figured out that doesn't do anything (which is most likely will not) call up Best Buy.
