Golly, this Obama administration is getting to be more and more like a Police state. I wonder if they'll be breaking down doors if you don't pay the fine, er, fee, er, tax for not subcribing to Obamacare?

This is pretty loltastic. I thought only the middle east threw people in jail for not paying their bills.

Dubai's bankruptcy laws mean that debtors can go to prison merely for bouncing a cheque, while breaching stringent rules on trading while insolvent can bring lengthy terms.

Dubai Airport reported earlier this year that 3,000 people had abandoned cars leased or bought on hire purchase in their hurry to leave.

Fuck the fact that they have a SWAT team, are they seriously using SWAT to bust down peoples doors for unpaid student laws?!?!?!?!? Seriously?

Who said this was about an unpaid student loan and where did you get that from? Unpaid loans are a civil matter, not a criminal matter.

^ Yeah, I can't possibly believe that a SWAT team arrived to collect on unpaid student debt. That's nuts, there's clearly more to the story. Terrible fucking journalism.

Btw, I like how a few tards here took this story at face value, lol.
What I like is how you make statements like this based on 'feelings'. You're as guilty as the 'tards' you berate.

Prove your case.

Can you name me one possible scenario that something involving a student loan would require a SWAT team to knock down someones door and violently raid the house looking for them?

I can guarentee you this was not about an unpaid student loan. I don't even know what the hell you are talking about in this thread. This thread involves an action taken regarding a so far undisclosed alleged crime.

It's not particularly difficult to see if you're a reasonable person. No one gets raided for unpaid student debt. It's common sense and there's no proof because it's in the early stages of this case. Wait 24 hrs or, perhaps more likely, another week and when the clarifying article is posted, promise not to be mad if someone bumps this thread, mkay?

Sure; if she were part of a large student loan embezzlement scheme that crossed state lines that would therefore require federal intervention. Not that hard to come up with.

Oh I can come up with a ton of things that might require Federal intervention but a friggen SWAT team for embezzlement???

I am sure there is more to this case but it appears that it would almost certainly be white collar type crime and they aren't exactly the shoot the police type.

You realize if the guy had a dog they would have shot and killed it.

If he had a gun, and taken by surprise, they would have shot and killed him. Wouldn't be the first time.

The use of a SWAT team should be seen as the use of deadly force, but is instead being increasingly used. There is no excuse for it, it's murder, the victim here is lucky to be alive and those who authorized it should chased out of the country.

Well, you figure they used SWAT because they felt it required more than just a strongly worded letter. I'd love to hear the full story because clearly we don't have it yet.

U.S. Department of Education spokesman Justin Hamilton confirmed for News10 Wednesday morning federal agents with the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), not local S.W.A.T., served the search warrant. Hamilton would not say specifically why the raid took place except that it was part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

Hamilton said the search was not related to student loans in default as reported in the local media.

It's funny, when things like this happen under Obama, his loyal acolytes spring forth to make jokes about how Obama must have personally ordered a hit on some guy and his three kids.

That's a 180 from a few years ago when this sort of thing happened under Bush, it was all because Bush was a criminal mastermind while at the same time having the IQ of a chimp, and Harvey would come along to post several pages of emoticons.

The cognitive dissonance of party fanatics is amusing, to say the least.

Haha, bump! What a shock we didn't quite have the whole story. Even quicker than I thought, under 2 hrs is pretty quick clarification.

Agreed.

The increasing levels of partisanship has me very concerned about the future of the US. It only serves as a means to place blame, and not elect those who are truly in a position to serve the public interests. Rather than holding elected officials accountable, too many are content to simply point at the other side and place blame, all the while their own side is just as much a part of the problem. When both sides are doing this, both sides get away with the incredible ineptitude that is on the rise.

I just don't understand why so many people think one ideology or party has a complete monopoly on the solutions and ideas we need to move our country forward. It truly boggles the mind when history shows both major parties have failed, and are continuing to fail us.

While I am making a bit of a leap comparing what is evidently a Federal SWAT team (am I correct on that part?) to the tactics and actions of local law enforcements use of SWAT but imho SWAT has been absurdly overused in situations that absolutely do not require it.

BTW, doesn't sound like much "investigating" is going on if they are kicking down doors to places she no longer lives and isn't at. How many hours of a stakeout do you suppose the cost of a forced entry raid with SWAT would have covered?

Off topic question: If they have a warrant to enter your premises and arrest a person and that person is not there when they kick the door in do they have the right to search for other evidence (such as going through computer files or looking in your file cabinet) while they are already inside?

From the article in the OP.

Fair enough, but as has been said, this is obviously a criminal matter and involves more than a simple default. In your earlier posts you were boiling this down to an unpaid loan. The article is a bit misleading but that's why we think critically about what we read.

Gee, what a surprise.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/0..._n_873272.html

How did I guess this was about more than a defaulted student loan but some other people didn't?

"While it was reported in local media that the search was related to a defaulted student loan, that is incorrect," Hamilton said. "This is related to a criminal investigation. The Inspector General’s Office does not execute search warrants for late loan payments."

I still fail to see how it required breaking down his door and holding the guy at gunpoint.

Fucking hell, the bankers that have shafted the US out of tens and hundreds of billions of dollars haven't gotten that kind of treatment.

Regardless of whether this was about student loans or not, did they even bother to maybe investigate whether she was even there or not?

Do you really think fraud investigations are valid uses for SWAT teams? For what reason?

A SWAT (special weapons and tactics)[1][2] team is an elite tactical unit in various national law enforcement departments. They are trained to perform high-risk operations that fall outside of the abilities of regular officers. SWAT team members' duties include: performing hostage rescues and counter-terrorism operations; serving high risk arrest and search warrants; subduing barricaded suspects; and engaging heavily-armed criminals. SWAT teams are often equipped with specialized firearms including submachine guns, assault rifles, breaching shotguns, riot control agents, stun grenades, and sniper rifles. They have specialized equipment including heavy body armor, ballistic shields, entry tools, armored vehicles, advanced night vision optics, and motion detectors for covertly determining the positions of hostages or hostage takers inside enclosed structures.
Why didn't they just send in a cruise missile?

Yeah it does seem excessive even though we don't know the whole story. The article mentions that the OIG executes 35-40 warrants per year. It occurs to me that if this department can afford to use a team that size to execute every warrant for someone suspected of a white collar crime, maybe they are overfunded? Or perhaps they don't do this for every warrant and there was something special about this particular one that we don't know about.

I don't think it's appropriate, hence the reason I knew there had to be more to the story. Making boomerang hilariously wrong yet again.

Not mad at all. The evidence to back up your statement was out there when you made your post. The station that did the original reporting had already issued the results of their additional investigation.

Instead of doing the progressive name calling shtick, a simple Google search would have proved your assertion to be true. I question why you can't present your thoughts without calling people retards.
