Who Knew Grocery stores paid so well?

I just got hired and they are paying me $8.75 an hour ($10 after 3 months working there)

I wish I knew this cause last summer I worked construction for $10 an hour full time cause I thought grocery stores and stuff only paid like $6 an hour.

I suppose that pay isn't too bad for a part time gig.

Back in high school I made $10/hr at Staples.

By the way, your username is awesome.

I worked at a mom/pop grocery store from age 14 all through college. I was a bagger though. I was paid minimum wage ($5.25 at the time) + tips. At 18 I coulda became a cashier but I didn't want to cause with tips I could make more than a cashier.

They were paid like 7.75$/hr I believe and after 3 months, up to around $9/hr. Thing was, on Sunday it was time and a half, so they were making around $14/hr on Sundays. Not too bad.

On weekends w/my bagging wage I could make about $40 in tips in a good 5-6 hour shift + minimum wage. Weekdays I would atleast make $20 in a 5-6 hour shift but could hit $30 if it was busier.

I've never tipped a bagger or been tipped myself when i bagged for like that one week when I hated my life

the easiet most profitable job I worked was Running/Calling Bingo

$8.50 and hour plus tips, I could easily make $200 in ones calling for 3 hours. That job put my wife through college and bought our first house plus at least 3 cars. If I was a college age kid I would check any Bingo hall out around you. I know the Casino Bingo workers make good money.

I also worked at a "mom & pop" grocery store bagging groceries, and got tips. (Well, it also happened to be my mom & pop, but that's not relevant)

I don't think they do it anymore, but back then the bagger would not only bag your stuff but take it out to your car and load your car.

Not everyone tipped. Customary low tips was just the change they got back from their order, 25-50¢. A dollar was also common.

There was one guy that worked there that had been a bagger for many many years there, he practically knew everyone's name (all the regulars) and how many kids they had and everything else and basically had a really good relationship with hundreds and hundreds of loyal shoppers.

He easily made $40+ in tips per hour, plus whatever he was getting paid.

Anyway, this whole story took place in like 1992?ish. That guy no longer works there, and everyone prefers to take out their own groceries to their car now.

WTF tips grocery baggers?

By tips he means grabbing an item or 2 out of some old lady's bag on the way to the car while he's got her distracted with small talk.

I didn't know either until I spoke with one of my friends who works at a local Acme. He started at $7.50, got a raise to $8 (for bagging) and eventually worked his way up to $10/hour after not too long.
