Can't wait for the party to begin!! The game is going to look unbelievable today in HD!! The only thing that is going to suck is that there will only be 7-12 HD cameras shooting the SuperBowl, as opposed to 40 cameras that will be in use for the NTSC broadcast....The ABC affiliate in my area also told me that they will be sending along the 5.1, so that rocks. I'm planning on having a 32" TV next to the 47" projection to show the difference between the standard definition shots (I know, I'll have to turn down the audio on the SD broadcast since the digital will be delayed by about 2 seconds)....

A few other tidbits:

--The game is being broadcasted in 720p
--The HD Broadcast will not use the Electronic 1st down marker, while the Standard Definition broadcast will (I hate not being able to see that)
--The HD broadcast will be framed for 16 x 9 sets while the standard definition broadcast will be framed for 4x3
--The HD production will be seperate from the NTSC broadcast.
--The pre-game will most likely not be in HD, only the moments leading up to the game will be.
--There will be some SD 4:3 shots interspersed with the HDTV shots. This may also include some replays.
--The HD commercials should look the same as the standard definition commercials (so no stretching will be involved)
--Here is an interesting article on the preparation of data that will need to happen to make the SB in HD happen Link

Bah if I was home I'd be watching on my 100" HD screen. Unfortunately I'm gonna be sitting in a Holiday Inn in Manhattan. Bummer.

My wife will be watching though!

I wish I could but not enough $$ to: 1) buy a new TV, 2) get a STB, 3) get an antenna:(

How much better does HDTV look? I find it hard to believe it looks THAT much better to sacrifice the yellow first down marker that we've all grown to love.

arod, nice setup...can't believe you did all of that in a bedroom!! :) good work

Not only is HD much, much better, but you can see more of the field. That might not seem like a big deal, but it's cool to be able to watch what is happening in the secondary. Since separate broadcasts are involved, I hope they position the HD camera so that we don't have to see 10 yards of backfield on eac play.

Also, don't forget that HD broadcasts can push through 5.1 audio, as opposed to two channels on standard broadcasts....

1st, look up the model number on the web to see if it is HDTV capable....

2nd, even if he bought a HDTV, it might not (probably won't) have an integrated tuner. This means that you would have to run to BestBuy (or similar store) and buy one for around $400.

So what you need is:

HDTV + HD receiver + rabbit ear antenna (or cable company) + being in the proximity of a digital tower (how many miles are you from your ABC affiliate)

or

HDTV with built in HD receiver + rabbit ear antenna (or cable company) + being in the proximity of a digital tower

or

HD PCI card + antenna + being within the proximity of a digital tower

Hope that helps......

Look at the tv itself, or the owner's manual. Should say HDTV, Hi-Deffinition, or at least list what it's capable of recieving: 720p or 1080i are the two most frequently seen specs, I believe. If you don't see anything like this, it's a standard deffinition TV. Do you know what your dad paid for it? That could be a good indication too; HDTVs are more expensive than a similarly sized standard television.

EDIT: Badluck beat me to it :D

Think it was around 5000, no clue where the owners manual is. I *think* it may be High Definition though, if I remember correctly I think he was looking at those. Assume it is HDTV, how can I watch in H DTV mode instead of regular?

Ack, just read your post badluck, doesnt look like Im watching in HDTV tonight :(

Check if it has the hdtv receiver inside. Manual does wonders. If not tough luck.

edit for: spelling

Look at badluck post above my last one. Looks like he spelled everything out. From what you paid, I'd say yes it is an HDTV. Lucky bastard :p

Doesn't look hopeful

Unless you have some killer antenna with great gain mounted a few hundred feet in the air.

Why? It's on ABC? Anybody with a TV and a coat hanger can watch it without dropped frames and buffering issues. Streaming HD quality would be cool but that's some serious bandwidth.

One day, though...it will happen!

I doubt that will happen anytime in the near future....Too much $$ involved to stream on the net (unless the broadcast company that paid for the rights had a hand in it)....

how do u find out if your local abc station is broadcasting in digital?

in my theatre room (just finished a couple weeks ago) I can only seem to get NBC and a couple of other stations in digital. On my DSS reciever, I would hit 4.1 oppsed to just 4 (NBC) to get the digital broadcast for that station but that does not work for 7 (ABC) But I am in Detroit so I would have to believe that ABC is broadcasting it in HD. Anybody have any idea what I have to do to get it?

OK it is a HDTV I think. On the front of the TV it says Ultrascan HD, so Im assuming that stands for High-Def.

The model is Hitachi CLU-577TSI

Im looking on google to find out for sure if it is HDTV, but Im having some tough luck.
