Who is to blame?

Damn--I just heard on CNN that a jury awarded a lifelong smoker a multi-BILLION dollar award in a lawsuit against evil tobacco.

I don't smoke myself, but I really think that it's bogus to blame a tobacco company for smoking habits. I mean--who can say that he/she does not know that tobacco is addictive and unhealthy without being disingenuous? Geez . . .

Maybe I can sue McDonald's for all those french fries I am eating . . .

Actually you can... or at least i believe some Hindus are (i think it's because McD adds beef lard to their fries to make them yummier).

The case isn't whether or not the person knew. The tobacco companies have used sneaky ads and have done things to them that make them more addictive and have claimed that they aren't addictive. They are evil. Like the fruiets of the Deveel.

Barring those who started smoking before it was really well known how harmful it is, I think awarding smokers compensation for their habits is a bit out there. They know the risks, yet choose to take them. The tobacco co. didn't force them to start smoking.

<Edit> <<have done things to them that make them more addictive>>

If that is true, that's awful!🙁

I don't believe in that verdict. Although I do believe Big Tobacco is to blame for quite a but of the problem. Once people find out that this stuff is gonna kill you, isn't that a sign that says STOP SMOKING!!!! I mean this means that even though we know large consumptions of fatty foods is going to kill us (and the tast of fat is a bit of a addiction). Does this mean that we can sue the bacon producing companies for selling us this crap?

But not only them. Every company that creates products filled with fat. So IMO, this is a ridiculous verdict. If you know its gonna kill you, unless you don't respect life itself, you would find a way to stop. If not for yourself, but for your loved ones (don't mean to preach).

My questions is, has this smoker stopped smoking since this lawsuit started? :|

Depending on how old this smoker is, this person could have started before smoking was considered dangerous to ones health. I understand from an elderly friend that her doctor used to recommend that she smoke Menthol cigarettes when she had sore throats.
The Insider was an interesting look at how tobacco companies didnt want their consumers to know the truth.

You've obviously never come into contact with someone who is addicted to anything. It's tough. REALLY tough to overcome an addiction. Your fatty foods comparison doesn't mean a thing because they aren't really addictive. They are only addictive to a small amount people and it's not really the fatty foods, but food itself. Nicotine IS addictive. It's a drug. A better comparison would be caffiene, but too few people die from caffiene related problems.

Actually, I do know people who are addicted. I, for example, am addicted to the internet. And a whole bunch of other things, but I better not say!

Good point though, about addiction. Not ethical for a company to knowingly sell addictive AND harmful products.

Well at least that would raise the cost of cigarettes inturn causing less people to smoke...i personally hate standing next to people that smoke..
