Who is the richest person in the world?

I've heard before that the Sultan of Brunei had more money than Gates in the past..but in all the articles I generally read, Gates is given credit for being the richest man in the world. And now there's the Ikea guy who's passed Gates, but still a recent article by Forbes says that "This is also the position taken by Bill Gates Sr., father of the Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) chairman, the only man in the world richer than Buffet."

So who is it?

I think Gates is richer in terms of personal wealth, since the wealth computation for the Sultan doesn't separate personal and gov't property.

The owner of ikea was claimed to be richer than gates. After a lot of scrutiny, though, the calculation formula they used was found to be somewhat suspect.

I think u gotta consider who that money ends up with in the long run too. Think of all the kids the sultan has vs the kid gates has.
gates money will be around a LOT longer than the sultans will...

I remember gates saying something that he planned to strategically give away a large majority of his fortune before he dies. He knows he has way too much money.

How do you figure Gates money will be around a lot longer? The Sultan and his family were rich long before Gates was even around.

I don't know, Gates wife is kinda hot. Who knows what the Sultan's wives look like. It doesn't matter how many he has if they're all dog ugly.

The Sultan of Brunei. It's a small country in the south Pacific. It doesn't matter how he got the money because the family is broke.

yeah they decided like a week later that gates is still richer.

should be the found of walmart, but he is dead. his family is the richest family in the world with no doubt. net about 120 billions, IIRC
