From any era in American history. Feel free to comment why you made your choice.

I'll also add to the poll if you like.

It is hard to decide since most of them had different strengths, weaknesses, and responsibilities.

I picked Eisenhower.

I voted for Grant, partly because he succeeded where others failed, so it is obvious he personally made a big difference.

Several others are probably just as good, but don't have such clear evidence of how they personally did something that someone else couldn't do.

Patton was the best.. He didn't sugarcoat anything and he didn't give a sh1t about his reputation.

I think MacArthur is underrated. I voted for him because of his masterful campaign in the Southwest Pacific in WW II, as well as his leadership in the Korean war, especially the Inchon landing. His abilities were shown to be great outside of war, he was the dictator of Japan for 5 years!

His defense of the Philipines was hardly masterful.

General Curtis Lemay

</waits to be called a heartless and evil bastard for the choice>

Seriously though? I'm not sure, there are so many to choose from.

General Specific was the best. He served with Major Minor and Private Public.

You are right. Especially allowing the Air Corps to get blown up...on the ground...9 hours after Pearl Harbor:confused:

I think his accomplishments overall outweigh that episode, though.

Robert E. Lee, here are a few examples of his fine work:

Second Battle of Manassas
63,000 Feds versus 54,000 Cons. Lee wins with fewer casualties.

Battle of Cold Harbor
108,000 Feds versus 62,000 Cons. Lee wins with only 2,500 loses compared to Grant's 13,000.

Battle of Chancellorsville
97,382 Feds versus 57,352 Cons. Lee wins with fewer casualties.

Battle of Sharpsburg
87,000 Feds versus 45,000 Cons. Inconclusive battle, but Lee did very well considering how badly he was outnumbered and the Federal commander had captured a copy of Lee's battle plan before the engagement.
