Just curious, I'm wanting to piece together a home theater set up, and my only local options are Radio Shack and driving 300 miles to Denver . . . I'd much rather order online. :)

I would stay away from crutchfield, as they are quite pricey. You might want to check out Supreme Video as they have a pretty nice selection and very nice prices.

Search for your stuff at MySimon.Com and find a place that way. FatWallet.Comcan also do the same with their search. Don't forget about BestBuy.Com, because they have sales on occasion. Sears.Com carries lots of things too. Watch for the shipping prices at those small "LetsGoDigital" places. Factor that in with the knowledge that many are also not "Authorized" distributors of this stuff.

800.com is great if you can find a nice deal. Certain promotions knock the price down nicely. No sales tax (for me at least) and shipping is sometimes free.

another vote for crutchfield. good stuff, great company to deal with. and the people who work there actually know what they're talking about, which is a pleasant suprise.

I forgot to add yesterday, that it might be a real good idea to try and buy from an Authorized dealer using a price match by one of the little guys. For instance, "LetsGoDigital" (frequently lowest MySimon prices) has the lowest price on a unit that Sears also sells. "LetsGoDigital" is not an authorized reseller and they charge huge S&H fees. Sears doesn't take that into consideration when they match the price. Hot Deal for you! ;)

I've done very well off of Ubid's audio auctions. I walked away with a very nice Wharfedale setup (2 fronts, center, 2 rears) for under $500. Not a a bad deal at all.

Crutchfield doesn't carry much high quality stuff, but more name-brand equipment. A lot of Sony, Pioneer, etc. I'm not saying that that is crap, just not top of the line if that's what you're hunting for. Their prices aren't the greatest as well. The benefit of buying from them is they've got great customer support, and will supply anything you need to get it working. i.e. in car audio, they'll give you fitting kits for free if you buy their headunit. They're also authorized to sell everything they have, so you can always get your full warranty thru them. Many companies say, "we do not allow our equipment to be sold by internet retailers, except crutchfield." So if Sony/Pioneer/etc. floats your boat, go for it. Check out UBid for very cheap prices. When they put up 100 items for auction, there's only a certain number of people who want that product at that exact time. So you can end up getting stuff for less than 1/2 the retail. Like I said, get Sears to price match LetsGoDigital. That will get you an "Authorized" warranty, lowest price and decent shipping price. Not to mention being easier to return if you don't like it.

Here's what I found comparison shopping for the Sony STR-DE845:Edit: Just looked at Ubid.Com. That might do the trick, Xerox Man. Good call, StealthX32! :Q

There's plenty of good "hifi" shops in Denver.

Soundtrack is pretty good, carries stuff that bestbuy don't carry such as Denon, Yamaha (higher end stuff) and especially speakers that the big chains don't normally carry such as boston acoustics, definitive technologies.

If you want REAL high end go to listen up but be ready to part with some serious green.
