I was shocked by the results. At my time of vote...

Tim Duncan - 38%
Kevin Garnett - 32%
Kobe Bryant - 22%
Shaquille O'Neal - 7%

Okay I can understand Tim Duncan, but Kevin Garnett?! Wuh? And that far ahead of Kobe Bryant and Shaq?
 
These "who's the best" arguments always amuse me. "Best" is such a lame word to use without qualification. What people end-up arguing without knowing, is what "best" means. With an unambiguous notion of "best", it makes choosing the "best" player a lot easier. I voted for TD, because to me "best" is a combination of individual and team success. TD has won two MVPs and two rings, most of that in the last two years. Also, his team is well-positioned to get him a 3rd ring, and he's the 2nd most valuable player. So, to me, over the last two years, TD has the best combo of team and individual accomplishments to his credit. Simple enough, no? That being said, I still make KG the MVP this year.
 
I would say Kobe has the most talent. The other 3 have physical superiority that gives them an advantage.
 
Kobe has talent, but not the dominance to lead a team to a championship. That's what TD has. You would think KG has it too, but he only now got out of the first round. Shaq is dominant, but not so much this year. Maybe a couple years ago yes
 
Shaq is really starting to show his age. His numbers in the playoffs are down and he couldn't make a free throw if his mother's life was dependent on it.

No contract extension for you!

Really, its impossible to say one player is "the best" right now. Jordan made that discussion pretty easy in his prime, but now it isn't nearly as clear-cut.

I do believe, though, that the top three players in the league right now are KG, Duncan, and Kobe...but to put them in any order is really impossible to completely justify.

Oh, and I have to comment on the "Kobe - the 3 others have a physical superiority which gives them an advantage" - wow that is an awful statement. Yes, those three are taller, but isn't speed an advantage? Isn't quickness? Isn't leaping ability? Come on now.

i agree. but kg is impressive also, so an honorable mention to him. in fact, the only one i really scoff at in that list is shaq, even being a lakers fan, i appreciate when he gets that crucial dunk or kiss of the glass, but watching him go to the line is excruciating for me. when i think of best player, he?s got to be well-rounded in all aspects of the game.

edit: neov makes a good point also. its a 2-way street. what kobe gives up in height and strength, he makes up for with speed, stamina, and agility. i still take kobe though as i see him more well-rounded in both the way he plays offense and defense. not taking anything away from the other guys, but hell, duncan elbowed him in the face last night, he still managed to pull down the steal from him.

TD's adventures at the FT line come close to Shaqs. so i wouldn't let that rule a player out.

TD and KG are the two best in my opinion. who is #1 i think could change day to day.

It's a shame that McGrady is always injured. I would put him up there with Kobe if his health was better. Grant Hill would have been some player to watch had his ankle been made of anything but glass.
