What raw materials sell for more than the actual item though?

All kinds of things, though I come at it from mainly a tailor's perspective. Pearls are a good example. A lot of the crafted cloth armor on my server sold (or didn't even sell) at the price of raw materials. Part of it is players basically buying their skillups and trying to recoup what they can fast by selling at or below cost. Another is the lack-luster stats where it's easier and cheaper to whomp a monster and scoop up whatever comes out of his loot-chute.

That's not to say that you can't make money crafting and selling by any means. You can get lucky, or you can spend a lot of time monitoring the market. But almost any time I've measured the time vs earnings, questing and grinding would come out on top and with an xp gain to boot. Some make the argument that you can grind for the crafting items and then they're "free," but then so are all drops which you could again sell as raw materials. I've made some money on crafting and the market, but again it's pretty underwhelming from what I've seen.
on my server, a mooncloth robe sells for about 20 gold less than it takes to make it
Does that seem strange to you?
It does seem counter-intuitive, but all it really means is that leveling their crafting skill is more important than money. That, and that making money lies in the goods. I think I have made more money off selling enchanting supplies than actual enchants. Or when I do sell enchants, I just buy the stuff off the AH and charge them that plus a fee.

MC and Onyxia in 4.5 hours, then dropped Vael tonight, Broodlord to 25% after an accidental pull and no prior organization (will most likely die next raid). I'm sure I can speak for the guilds who do high end content when I say it's a true sense of accomplishment to be making progress in BWL.

Yep, still having fun.
The guild I'm in is a merge between two guilds, done since neither of them was large enough to get into MC/BWL on their own, nor large enough to attract enough new players to do it.
Now we're one of the largest guilds on the server, doing MC all the time pretty much.

Also enjoying AV, the Horde on my server has actually become quite adept at it, using strategy most of the time as opposed to mindless zerging, which actually makes AV very enjoyable.

For all of you that are complaining about not making money Tailoring stuff. I just spent 50g + mats on Spell Mastery gloves for my alt mage. He is the only one on this server with the pattern so not too big of a deal for me to toss him 50g.

I think after we kill Rag this week (should be 3rd time), the mixed group I'm in can consider Rag on farming status. Kill #1 had to survive 2 waves of Sons to kill Rag. Kill #2, killed Rag before 2nd wave of Sons.

I'm still having fun raiding MC and working on my alt. Really looking forward to Zul Gurub, I think that'll be a lot more fun than MC.
