Nah, our President isn't THAT much of a puppet. All the important decisions are ultimately his to make. Unfortunately, he has Karl Rove in his ear, who might quite possibly be the most evil man in the history of American politics (no joke). The guy will stop at nothing to win elections, and he has no shame in destroying his political opponents. The President trusts him more than anyone else, and Rove's advice is usually what the President follows. He could be considered Co-President, and that's a very dangerous thing.

Beamer, if we had stuck to obeying the rule of law, our first laws, we would never have become that bottom-feeder.

definately big business; bush certainly isn't, let alone his team of power-hungry goons can't decide who can steer the wheel! but they all fall back to big business, which was the whole reason for the iraq invasion in the first place!

You're right. Big business made Sadaam give the UN the bird for 10 years. Big business also made Sadaam actively fan the flames of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Sadaam's penchant for invading neighbors? Yep, Big Business there too. Having 'professional rapists' on the Baath payroll, or using minorities and political dissidents as test subjects for chem/bio weapons? Ok, that was all Sadaam - Big Business just suggested it.

Sadaam had many, many opportunities to prolong his happy life of sticking people into plastic shredders and gasing fellow countrymen. While I abhor the role Big business now plays in our politics, I'm not about to start fabricating a blame game.

The U.S. has narrowed it's version of the cast system.

There are fewer at the top but they wield more power than ever before.

Democracy = rule of the people
demos (gr.) = people, commons
cratos (gr) = rule, power

Isn't the US a democracy?

Vaerilis, no the framers detested a democracy. Democracy = majority rule = mob rule. We're a representative republic that operates under the rule of law. Or at least we once were.

The US should be a presidental-system democracy (republic) with a non-direct electional system.
However, that hardly matters. The people run no countries in the modern world.
