Who is missing the Dotcom days?

I miss that time so much. Not because there were thousands of crazy dotcoms, but because of the vision that era created. At that time it seemed like striking it rich was actually a reality (that is not to say that hard work is not involved). That era represented hope and optmism. It was the promise of things to come. Too bad, it got hyped up so much, that that hype caused its downfall.

Remember the brokerage commercial showing the guy watching a recorded tape of market highlights from the dot.com bubble days? And then you see him crying at the memory? I can relate to that.

I wasn't having fun with the free money, but it seems like on the whole it didn't help our industry much so I can't say I miss it.

Or the crazy stuff these dotcoms used to bring to the career fairs. One time back in 1999, I think 1/3 of the companies at the career fair were either startups or dotcoms. They brought all sorts of crazy things, and were giving away PDAs and what not. Now adays, you only see the big names at the career fairs and all they bring are pens and little toys.

I am still using an air conditioner,microwave,dishes,coffee maker,pots and pans that I got free, between mothernature.com,vitamins.com planetrx,drugstore.com and more.com I didn't need to buy soap,shampoo,toothpaste,cosmetics,razorblades,toliet paper,paper towels or coffee for a couple of years.

I also got tons of cash too

yes,Staples is a brick and mortar store that decided to expand via an online store..oh for the good old days of reams of paper and free candy being delivered to my door

Man, I feel robbed. I worked for a .com, but I didn't never got any of the cool benefits of it! I didn't get an Areon chair, state of the art equipment, or a ton of stock options. I did end up working the 60+ hour a week work schedules testing their buggy software, however. Oh well, I guess that I worked for the wrong .com.

At least I was smart enough to get out before the company went bust along with most of the others!

At the time I was reminding everyone buying tech stocks of "tulip mania" * and pointing out the goofy business models, but greed won over sanity. A coworker lost 90% of his portfolio value in techs, while my boring S&P500 fund shares are only down about 30% from the peak.

I wasn't smart enough to get out in time and took a big pay cut to work at one. Ah well, it was fun and you live & learn.

I may be misunderstanding you...yes people lost hordes of cash but we now have this huge infrastructure to support further growth and innovation. (Global Crossing is a good example of this). The true reward of the whole era has yet to be seen....

I think alot of the infrastructure is gone. Large server farms torn down and sold cheap on ebay/dove bid. I was really thinking more of it from the the IT workers standpoint. A ton of people entered this industry hearing it was an easy way to make money quick. Now we have a glut of workers and competition for jobs has driven salary rates down and made the prospect of finding a job in this business more grim.
