Who is McCain & the RNC going to use as this year's "scary black man" (Willie Horton)?

I suspect that pollsters and the RNC have told McCain that the only way he has a chance against Obama is to go (very) negative.

I wonder who this year's "scary black man" (Willie Horton) is going to be?

IMO, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright will only be effectively portrayed as the "angry black man," and even then, once voters are more familiar with McCain and Obama (i.e. they have debated several times), I think only blind partisan warriors or feeble minded voters would be susceptible to such pathetically obvious manipulation.

Of course the Willie Horton ad was racial. That isn't even a question. Insofar as if McCain will have to go negative or not, the answer is probably yes. His positions are less popular then Obama's pretty much across the board, and their strategy is to make this into a personality/character campaign. If you're at a political disadvantage, you go negative. That's just how campaigns work. (at least ones that want to stand a chance of winning)

If you ever hear the words 'campaign on character', that's a political code word for 'smear your opponent into the ground'. I personally have no problem with negative campaigning so long as they are anywhere approaching honest. (Swift Boat Veterans need not apply) That's just part of the game. We should just be honest with ourselves as to what it means.

There's the whole issue of heritage, as well, so it's important to remember that McCain will attempt to ride into office on the coattails of the Texas slime machine, unabashed applicators of whatever tarbrush they could find or fabricate... devoted followers of the Lee Atwater school of winning...

You could ALMOST argue that Gore started the Horton thing in a debate. He didn't mention that Horton was black, indeed he didn't mention Horton by name at all. But he did ask Dukakis about the weekend pass thing and that brought it to the Repugs attention. They, of course, ran with it. So, like I said, you could ALMOST argue that Gore started it.

I don't think his problems will subside with your 'typical' white guy or you're 'typical' white woman or your 'typical' latino due who will only get more shocked the more they 'learn' or are taught, as the case may be, about Obama.

I googled for presidential futures market and see a recent spike up and down: http://www.intrade.com/# (click on McCain graph for enlarged view).

I would think that most of those traders are trying to make money on day to day fluctuations, rather than betting on whom they think will eventually win the actual election, but something as devastating as that, if it were a game changer, would have presumably spiked up the McCain percentage and left it at a new higher baseline?

(I am also wondering whether release of such a tape, say after Labor Day, would only serve to reinforce already pre-held positions, rather than drastically changing the playing field?)

If the tape does surface, you won't see it till October. Than you will see it 10 times a day on every station/radio/web page for a month. I think it truly is a big if.


One lil tibbit to add


The presence of the tape is in doubt. Anywhere from 1-5 sources in anywhere from Chicago to Florida to New York have seen/heard/read transcript of the tape secretly/together/in the mail/secret tape cassette.

Just saying, no one has a straight story besides someone threw around the term whitey supposedly. Seems more of a "lets drop the rumor bond on some blogs and let them run with it, see where it goes, maybe we will get lucky" type game the republicans love to play.

Most people won't need a tape to come to the conclusion Farrakhan, Wright and the Obama's are peas in a pod. It's only the latte libs and the college kids swooning still. And 95% blacks of course which can be forgiven considering it's the first time they've got a serious candidate in history.
