Who is going to buy AMD now?

Realistically, who is going to go for a new AM2 system now when given the option of a similarly/better performing Core 2 Duo system at the same price level? Which would you choose if building a value/performance dual core rig from scratch? Are the AMD price cuts irrelevant for builders of new systems? Personally I can see no reason for buying AMD at the moment, other than perhaps to upgrade an existing s939 system.

Assuming I could sell my s754 board, Sempron64, and 9800Pro for a reasonable price, I could upgrade to s939, X2 3800+, and budget PCI-e video card for around $175. I may put off the upgrade for a little while, but when I do upgrade, it will be AMD.

I might actually buy a AM2 3500+ single core if they hit $50-60 bucks. Combine that with a Tforce 6100 mobo for $70 and some cheapo DDR2800 memory= great bang for buck gaming rig until the 65nm and/or K8L dualies come out. Or maybe a 3800 X2 for the $150 plus the others still beats the Intel systems on price by enough for me to give up some performance. No matter what though I'm going to wait it out for awhile until both platforms(mobos) mature and see what the AM2 Opterons bring to the table.

But I also want an awesome, feature-rich MB. That's $200+ in Intel land, or $140 for the M2N-SLI for AM2.

It'll depend on MB availability and CPU availability/prices in early August.

E6300 is about 25% more expensive (retail vs retail) than an X2 3800+ AM2.
Not sure about motherboards, but you can definately get cheap AM2 motherboards, while a lot of 775 which support Conre 2 Duo seem to be about 50% more expensive, though I haven't investigated much (that's an nForce 570 vs a 965 775 mobo).

So, when I can save £60 or so (over $100) buying an AM2 system, it becomes an appealing proposition.

An X2 3800+ makes perfect sense for people who have a low-end single core s939 cpu. It's everyone else I'm wondering about.

Better question: Since most people are already running AMD systems, how many are going to upgrade their CPU a lot sooner than expected because the massive price drop is just too enticing to pass up?

If you want to make the question even longer, add: "since most of us already own a s939 system and would rather simply upgrade to a high-end s939 cpu and skip AM2 entirely". ;P

I thought about getting a conroe E6600 system, but with the quad core coming out next year and the conroe price premium price I have to pay, I think I'm gonna upgrade to a modest AM2 X2 3800+ for now.

I know I'll be skipping AM2 entirely heh. I skipped 754 and I'm bound to skip another until K9 comes along (or was it supposed to be K8L?). Went from 350MHz K6-2 to AthlonXP 2400+ Skt A to Athlon64 3200+ on 939

In fact I was planning on getting an X2 3800 for my dad this coming week, once the price cuts have gone through.

For overall system cost it is much better than Intel Core 2, and he doesn't need the extra performance. I also haven't found a micro ATX board for the core 2 yet.

The reason to stick with AMD is IMO not for AM2, but for socket 939 since being able to keep your RAM can save a couple hundred dollars if you've invested in top notch 2GB DDR.

For myself, I just got some Sempron 2800+ AM2 chips sitting here (waiting for RAM/mobo). Couldn't pass up the $36 price - damn the hot deals forum!

I personally would not buy any of the current Core 2 Duo CPUs - I'm waiting for a $130 C2D E4300. If someone wants to drop $330 for an E6600, that's their business and more power to them, but to suggest that EVERYONE NEEDS to drop that kind of money on a CPU is like saying EVERYONE NEEDS dual 7900GTX cards in SLI. If people are so sure that everyone needs it and life would be better with those more expensive components and buying them will increase the quality of my life, end starvation in 3rd world countries, make all terrorists drop dead and pot a stop to global warming, then dust of your wallet and give me some of your money so that I can buy the expensive stuff too, otherwise STFU!

That's not directed at anyone in this thread necessarily, just at the "other" times I've seen people go "OMG C2D FTW stupid to buy AMD now 'cause I'm a wealthy and elite bastard."

The Biostar TForce P965 Deluxe seems like a good buy (as a Conroe MB), too - for $135 - AT had got some nice Overclocks out of it.

An X2 4600+ looks like the CPU for me, because it's only going to cost $250(well, the retail prices are usually $20-25 more than on the per-1000s charts), which will suit me much better than an E6600, mobo, and the new ram for $650+, and will still deliver good performance.

Although, if there's some way that I can afford it, I might look at the FX-60.

For the most part, my original assumption seems correct. Most of those people intending to buy AMD are doing so to upgrade an existing system. After the initial flurry of upgrading, I'm guessing that AMD are going to slump. If I was building a new system in the next 6 months, I can't see myself going the AM2 route. Conroe boards should come down in price pretty quickly and the overall price difference between a complete Conroe system and a complete AM2 system will be neglible. And let's face it - a lot of us went s939 because of the overclocking potential of AMD and the crappiness of the P4 offerings. That situation has now changed drastically.

I built an AMD X2 system in Nov. '05, and I will not be upgrading for 3+ years (the life cycle of all my computers is at *least* 3 years). If AMD comes off their price for the FX-60 during the next several months, I'll pop one of those in, and that will be that. Down the road, I'll buy whatever looks good in 2009 or so...

I'm considering getting a new AMD setup. After the price cuts, I can get a motherboard plus an Athlon 64 for less than just the cost of just the C2D 6300. I'm mostly interested in upgrading my old AGP card to a speedy new PCIE card, so the less I spend on the mobo/cpu the better.
