www.usenetserver.com

Paying $14.95/unlimited downloads @ 2mbps. Excellent retention/completeness. Member for 2 1/2 years.

If I wanted to, I can download 18 GB everyday. I can fill a 200 GB HDD about 10 days.

If you want real quality for binaries go with giganews. I currently pull over 2 million threads on large groups. Retentention and completion are superb. Fortunately I get 5 GB/mo for $10 with my Speakeasy subscription.

PS - I had usenetserver and quit due to very poor bandwidth and very spotty completion which is death for binaries.

PPS - Wrong forum.

Switch to Verizon Online :) They have the best damn news service I've ever seen from an ISP. They even have Verizon-only info and support groups that are regularly monitored by Verizon reps.

(You may find this irrelevant as you live in Ohio, but any forumers living in Verizon territory who appreciate good news servers may wanna know.)

I've used Newshosting, and I don't have any complaints. The retention policy is long enough for my needs, the groups update quickly, and I've pulled down files at over 1MByte/sec. It's one hell of a deal for $15/month.:D

Thanks guys. Probably going to go with Newshosting. I have read better things about them than usenetserver on other sites also.

Wrong forum.

Then where should it go?

EDIT Just signed up for it. For two binaries groups I'm looking at a gig download just for the headers :Q Little different than the <1minute I'm used to seeing.

VVVV I heard that giganews will cancel heavy downloaders accounts without warning on the unlimited plan. I would never ever come close to the 100 gig "limit" I heard off but I don't approve of the limited "unlimited" plan.

Well newsgroups hardly seems "hardware" related. I have posted stuff like this in OT before.

Roadrunner news server has been up and down for me as well. BUT, my area just got a speed bump (had to reset cable box), and for the last week I have been pulling 4-5mbps downloads.

Newzbin faq.

I'm new to newzbin and still reading up on how to use it with Newsrover. Do I need to sign up for the premium membership or would just registering as a member be good enough to work with it. This sure sounds great if I won't have to search and download headers which is taking up so much time. thanks

You need to be a paid member to get the NZB files.

I used all the major usenet providers at one time or another. Giganews is good, easynew is good but not enough DL for the price. Usenetserver is good but I had a few too many bad experiences with them. The latest one I'm trying is astraweb. So far they've been good. $10 one time for 25GB. I use 5 threads with them an get 300-400KB/s.

yes you need to pay but it's very cheap & saves a lot of time by not having to sort through a bunch of headers, it's about 50cents per week, very affordable.

Well, other than the new service quality has tanked over the last six months, bandwidth problems, new server software problems, etc. Don't count on the "quality" of their usenet continuing as it has been over the last few years, not unless they make some major changes.

If anything TIAC.net's usenet service was the best that I've ever seen, out of any ISP-run servers. MediaOne's wasn't too bad either, although Verizon's is better in terms of coverage, but not in terms of bandwidth. Has timeout and auth errors occasionally too, and all posts are "tagged", no anon usage. Btw, there no "official" support, everyone posting there will make that clear up front, that Verizon does not officially monitor nor support those 0.verizon groups, they are only there for user-to-user support.
