I went to school in Poughkeepsie, and a friend of mine says that the Poughkeepsie plant is completely shut down. When I was in college (1994-1998) it wasn't and I still don't believe it is.

I actually worked at the Poughkeepsie plant for a year in 1997-98 as a Co-op. I havent been back up there for any college reunions though lately, so I cant confirm or deny if it's still in working order. I presume it is though, that place was huge and employed a LOT of people.

Ah! Poughkeepsie, my first destination in the US :) It used to remind me of Derry from Stephen King's It. I half-expected a clown to pop up from under some bridge. That IBM plant practically sustained the town, IIRC. I think some of my friends from back then (1997) might still be working there.

I work for IBM in Poughkeepsie... both sites, including Fishkill is up and operational. Poughkeepsie houses a pretty big data center, server manuf., and big presence of IBM Global Services. In Fishkill, they have a huge Chip manuf. plant where they are making the chips for the Xbox 360, PS3, etc.

Oh, man... Please tell me that you're not falling for that "global workforce" BS that they're spouting when IBM's VP's talk about outsourcing. Anyone with access to the hiring numbers can tell you that the US and Europe are the only areas taking huge layoffs this year, while the Brazil, India, and China regions are still having a major hiring boom. US jobs are being replaced by foreign replacements as cost cutting measure, plain and simple. Even the New York Times had an article about this awhile back, so it's common knowledge now.
