I was looking at somewhere in DFW where I could volunteer possibly in a computer related area (e.g., Web Div for not-for-profit). Have any ideas?


So who here volunteers and how?
 
I lend a hand to many metro united way caring stuff - soup kitchens, helping needy kids.

Donate and wrap presents for an elementary school here in town.

Teach/mentor boy scouts.

let's put is this way, there are plenty of people you could help. Wanna help compter related stuff? Talk to the local schools.

I want to join Habitat for humanity here in VA now that I used do it in Philly, but they haven't called me back🙁


Nothing like building a man's house with the guy right next to you. NOTHING, except doing the same for a disabled person🙂

I do have to admit, putting tarpaper on the roof of a two story house in innercity, PHILLY of all places (windy as hell) in the wintertime, during the winter on a cold day wasn;t that smart.
Hell, I had to nail panels while clinging for my life on those construction platforms was a bITCH!

up until fairly recently, I volunteered at a soup kitchen one night a week. I had to stop once I got my new job, though... my hours are too crazy and they change too often :/
 
I am a cyber volunteer for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. I reply to emails sent from parents of diabetic kids. I also help moderate medhelp.org. I pretty much do the same thing there, but from a wide vairety of people.
 
I volunteered to help the elderly by shopping for groceries & dealing with small things around the house & such a while back. The day right before I was suppose to go in, I ripped my arch & was in bed for a couple weeks. I was severly limping even a month later. Needless to say, I'm afraid to try ask if I can still help out. It's a big mood lifter to help someone in need. I would try it again if they let me.
 
Go to teen halfway house for alcohol & drugs, show them what you look like 40 years later. I do go there to help out, take small group to ball game or movie. Get them away from counselors & the same location.
 
Ummm... when you asked about volunteering, you did not just mean time, right?

We rescue cats... We take all the ones that are homeless, helpless and abused. We pay allt he vet bills to get them healthy, vaccinated and 'fixed'. They live with us until we can find them homes. If no one wants them, cause they are 'unplacable' (missing a paw or tail or whatever) they will live with me forever. And I do all my vet's computer maintanence for free.

We long distance adopted a little girl in another state. Her family do not have money, so we send her the things she wants/needs and her parents cannot afford. We also write a lot and speak on the phone twice a month.

I serve food and wash dishes in the shelter every holiday.

We spend a lot of time gather donations and shopping for kids who have nothing, so they get toys for Xmas. This is really a family thing... we don't buy stuff for each other (except our own young kids) and just throw all the money in a pot. Then I shop and deliver to the local welfare office.

I have adopted a soldier... I write and send care packages to him and other troops every weeks.

I volunteer at a local elementary school and tutor/mentor/hang out with at risk kids in an afterschool program. It is really rewarding, I wish I could give more time to it, but I work 30 hours a week and carry 17 credits so its pretty tough, but it is definitely one of the high points of my week. The kids are always happy to see you, and it feels really good to help them with problems and see the results of your labor. A lot of these kids come from very poor families and don't have a great home life. I help with homework and seeing the look on a child's face when they get something they couldn't do before will brighten your day 🙂

/edit oh I also co-founded a club here at UF to raise money for UNICEF, but we haven't done any fundraisers yet.
 
I volunteer two weekends a year for Camp Angel here in WI. Kids who have cancer in the family come to our camp and we give them a weekend of fun away from their problems.
I also do the Habitat for Humanity, soup kitchens, etc.
 
I work for Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada. I do staffing, administration, fundraising and helping out where ever needed.
 
I did some volunteer work at a thrift-mart type place, kinda like a Goodwill. I don't remember the name, but it was in Michigan. Basically I worked in the back, helped out with unloading deliveries and then I started fixing old donated computers. They weren't very powerful, just like Windows 95/98 boxes, but great for people in need.
 
I usually volunteer at all the major Marathons/Walks here in LA. I've been to the LA Marathon, AIDs Walk, Tit cancer walk, and a bunch of others. Free generic condoms = 🙂
 
I am always volunteering to do extra stuff off-the-clock at any of the schools I work for (public school district). We don't let any non-department employees touch our computers or network (beyond typical end-user actions) for security reasons... nearly all of the high schools in my area are the same way.

I'm also a volunteer for the Music Boosters at the high school I graduated from - we run the concessions stands at football games, basketball games, etc. I occasionally also volunteer to help that school's music dept by operating the sound/lighting boards or otherwise working in the auditorium or on its infrastructure.
