I'm just curious as to what will happen if you make a fast typer play the piano. Will he/she be decent? Has anyone tried this?

Whoever plays piano.. Are you pretty good/fast? And how fast are you on the keyboard.

Eh... I quit piano long ago but I was pretty good back then (for having only a few years experience) and I typed between 75-85wpm. Can't read sheet for crap now.

I know that my dexterity in typing was first improved from playing the piano, then from typing on a keyboard...I didn't really type too much until middle school whereas I've been playing piano since elementary.

I think they're pretty different actions/skill sets. Typing is pretty much a vertical action thing, with very little horizontal movement involved. Playing the piano is all horizontal across a much wider area. I don;t think just because you may be able to type fast that you would play the piano an better than someone who's a "hunt and pecker".

LOL, I said pecker.

Speed is not the measure of skill on a Piano. Music has a beat and rhythm not just 'play as fast as you can'.

My mother still plays the piano for fun to this day (originally wanted to become a pianist, flew to europe and lived there for 8 years just to be told "her fingers were too small" :roll;) and she types fairly quickly, maybe 120WPM+

My grandmother can type so fast she can jam the keys on a manual typewriter. minimum 120 WPM, probably more ike 150. She can't play piano worth beans.

Hmmm....played the piano since age 6, took typing in grade 9, and caught on prettywell. Not sure if that had anything to do with one or the other though...???

I don't know, manual dexterity is manual dexterity.

I'm not really sure how I should answer this, my first instrument(besides the glockenspiel, thank you Kindermusic) was the piano, I've basically stopped playing piano but I continue playing several other instruments and my typing is probably at around 80 WPM on a good day.

I can't say that being a fast typist has given me fast fingers, especially considering that I only got back into piano about 2 months ago, however I will say that being a touch typist has given me a lot of confidence in knowing where my fingers are and where they are going. When I was younger, I had to remind myself not to look at the keys. Now, I find my fingers just seem to "know" where to go just like they do when typing.
