Who here owns a Apex DVD player?

Who owns the silver DVD player like Wal-Mart has for $73.95? Well I just bought one and hooked it up. Power up with the CD loading screen just fine. But the tray will not open with or without the remote. When I hit the button to open on the TV is says opening but the tray doesnt come out. If you get close to the player you can here a lite humming noise when you try to open the tray.

My question is should I exchange or get a refund? I know this system was just defective but is Apex a reliable brand? If the next one does play will it burn up in a couple months? How many owns this player and also what are some DVD's that this sucker won't load?

from what i've seen, apex is very unreliable.
but for the price and its features, its definetly worth the money, not to metion they are very "hackable"
i own one of these, if they breakdown within a year, i'll get an exchange. if they breakdown after the warranty, then i'll buy another one.
at 80 bucks a piece, i can buy 3-4 of these for the money of a reputable brand with the same features.

apex seems to know how to play vcd and svcd very well. Any vcd I throw at my 1500 series it plays even if the video file wasn't encoded properly.

so the brand or this model is unreliable? According to their site the 1100 is the cheapest player they sell. So should I exchange it or get a refund and find a little bit better brand?

if i remember correctly, Apex uses PC DVD drives, that's why it can read all formats, as for its reliability, i believe you get what you pay for. the only reason people buy them is so that they can 'hack' into them and make them region free, etc. I'm sure there are some that think they were the best bang for the buck 'feature' wise... if I bought one, I'd but it from a place with good return policy

I think I will just get a refund as I am more about reliablility than features. I just want one to play movies. I guess I will just dish out a little more and get a brand name.

Which model do you own? I've got model 3201 that I got from K-Mart for $99 and it has tons of features plus I can disable Macrovision and refion free.

I had the AD-500W for a couple months, no complaints. It was actually quieter than the Pioneer I have now. It costs more ($89), but looks more solidly constructed than the 1100 and has the LED display.

I've got the Apex 1500 which Circuit City carries 24/7 for $79.99 with occasional sales dropping it to $69.99 or so. It's a really incredible piece in terms of media tolerance. It'll play anything you throw at it including scratched rental discs or cheapo VCDs that'll choke far more expensive players. You do tend to get what you pay for in build quality as they're notorious for having problems right out of the box. The disc tray is a big problem with Apex, especially on the lower end models like the 1100 and 1500. But if you get one that works out of the box, they're pretty reliable after that and they are easily hackable to remove the region protection. If you're looking for a very basic, dirt cheap DVD player, stick with Apex and just exchange the one you've got for one that works.

I've got a AD-660 since last Christmas and have had no problems whatsoever.

Can play anything I put in it.

I've had an APEX DVD player for quite some time now with no complaints. It only had trouble playing one DVD, but that was a problem with the DVD and not the machine. I was skeptical at first, but I believe that it's a quality player.

I've got an apex one... It rocks...

Got an mpeg1 or mpeg2 file? Put it on the cd (doesn't even have to be in VCD or SVCD format... Then select it with the mp3 menu!

i have the 500w i think. its i havent had a problem with it so far. it plays all dvd's i have and all cd's. it also does mp3's wich is neat

Well only place around me that sells DVD players are Kmart and Wal-Mart. The 1100 and 1500 is the only Apex players they had. When I went in to take that one back the worker told me that she had 2 or 3 returned in just one night. I was gonna exchange it untill she said that then I told her to just give me a refund.

If that many is gonna get returned like that I ain't interested in the brand or at least that model. I had the 1100 BTW.

ive got the AD-703. its good for a bedroom dvd player since not many ppl really have big screens in their bedroom.

I agree . . . you get what you pay for. I've got an early Apex. It has failed to play 2-5% of all DVDs. Otherwise it functions as well as a previous Sony and Panasonic.

I own two Apex players (500w and 1500) never had a problem with either. They play all my dvds fine, and vcd, svcd and mp3 cds.

I have an original APEX AD-600A that I got from Circuit City more than 2 years ago. It's the one that lets you change to any region you want with the remote code. I've just had one problem with it...if you play DVDs for about 5+ hours straight, the screen will develop artifacts until you cool it down. Other than that, it works great.

I also had a 660 that worked for a year, but then stopped reading discs.

I had an Apex 660-AD but I sold it and got an Apex 500-W. I've never had any problems with them. They are great little players.

I have the 800A and it has so many settings that it is mind boggling! Great player so far. I have not had any problems with it.
