I'm from Springfield, I drive up to STL occasionally to take my daughter to the zoo or the museums. Traffic sucks, high crime, I don't think I could live there myself.

well i visited there this weekend and it was great. I would consider living there or a nearby city like Belleville. My wife is actually applying for a teaching position in Belleville. So could be where we end up.

Now I would never consider East St. Louie!!! Haha. Now Washington Park would be GREAT!! 🙂

Washington Park? Good lord no. What school in Belleville?

haha I was joking about Washington park. Just wanted to see your response! I heard they couldn't even afford garbage service there and that they just littered it in ditches?? Not sure on what school it was. I can find out though.

I read an article for my philosophy class about East St. Louis. The conditions these people live in are just unreal. The city has less than 30 employees iirc outside of the school district, no garbage service, no building maintenance, sewage in the streets, and no running water in parts. Also, I believe the town is being contaminated by a few big drug companies, and no one is doing anything about it. It really is quite sad.

I live in Farmington, MO, about an hour from STL and about 1.5 hours from Cape Girardeau. I visit St. Louis frequently and I really like the place. I suggest moving into the metro area instead of like downtown St. Louis, maybe Manchester or Sunset Hills or something if you like to be in the "city". If you don't like fighting traffic and a (maybe slightly) higher cost of living, I suggest someplace either north or south of St. Louis, like Farmington. I've lived here almost all of my life (I'm 18) and I think it's a nice place to live. Lots of people live in this area and commute to and from STL. Just a thought 🙂

almost took a job in Belleville out of college. Sauget is where it's at! 😉

I live in Columbia, Il also. It really is a great town to live in and the access to the city - both downtown and South County, is great. The long post explaining all the places to go and things to see pretty sums up the most of it as far as that goes.

Traffic can be a serious pain in the ass. It takes me at least 30-40 minutes to get to downtown where I work and I'm 15 miles away. 270 is a pain also....luckily I don't have to take that route. It's a parking lot in the morning.

We do get our fair share of snow and ice here in the winter time. They do an "ok" job of taking care of it to make the roads driveable, but you still have to be very careful.

Overall I'd say I like it here quite a bit.

Grew up there (still live there, but attending college in Houston, don't really intend to move back to Stl when all is said and done. I would like to go back, but I'll follow whatever employment opportunities I have when I finish my schooling).

Its a great town. Not too big of a city to be crazy and overcrowded, but big enough to have a downtown, a good music scene, good sports teams.

Belleville is nice, but it is at least a half-hour from the city, I have an uncle that lives there. Columbia, I think, is even farther. I would suggest living on the Missouri side.

U-City is a cool place to live, but it will be expensive and there is some crime to deal with. The Central West End has some really cool old houses (mansions) . . . but the neighborhood has decayed and crime is high there.

Go a little farther west to the suburbs and you will be fine. Anywhere in Kirkwood or the surrounding burbs, you'll find safe, comfortable housing. KirkwoodWebster, Glendale, Warson Woods, etc. etc. are kinda the "half-way" suburbs, only a short drive from the city, more stuff around to do, but if you are willing to go out another 15 minutes by highway you can get a much larger house for the same price.

be careful not to buy in a floodplane. Some idiots have been putting subdivisions in the Missouri River's floodplane for years, just asking for a disaster.

Go to Saint Louis, its a great place.

East Saint Louis is hardly a part of Saint Louis anymore. Its just a place where you are careful not to get off the highway when you go driving through at this point. Its technically in Illinois, so not part of Stl city.

East Saint Louis was kind of a boomtown for a while, but it went belly-up and nobody has done anything about it. You will hear of the strip clubs in East Saint Louis, but even they are carefully placed off by themselves on the side of the highway.

Columbia is not that far from the city. I am 12 miles from the city, 15 to where I actually work. And the real estate is cheaper than some of the suburbs in Missouri, with less traffic and a "small town" feel. Kirkwood is extremely expensive actually, compared.

We are liking O'fallon, IL.
We are renting right now while the house is being built. PM me for a link to some pictures. Good prices, nice area.

It is a Scott AFB kind of town, but the nice thing about Scott is that it isn't a newbie kinda base. There seem to be lots of mature AF people. Families and such.

Always have some new neighbors becuase of the base.

Oh yeah, we call the Belleville and surrounding area the metro east. There is a pretty nice metrolink system that goes all the way from Lampert Airport and beyond (the big one and about an hour into north st. louis away from belleville) to Belleville Area College aka Southwestern Illinois College. Actually, it goes from SWIC all the way to Scott... i think. Its pretty cheap to ride, like $1.25 each way.

Ever heard of Jimmy Connors? He was once the worlds top tennis player and got famous with John McEnroe for their heated matches. Jimmy Connors is from Belleville. My uncle is one of his managers. Not so much any more, but when Jimmy was more towards his prime, my uncle used to get tons of tennis merch. and I used to get these phat reebok pump tennis shoes that werent even out to be bought. I got a few rackets too.

Ever heard of Scott Wolfe from Party of 5? He is from Belleville. His parents live back in Oak Hill AFAIK, which is where Im currently working with an investor to setup a music/art production studio. Oak Hill is a pretty nice subdivision with a few million dollar homes, most of them $250K to $600K.

Ever seen the show Quantam Leap? The main star, cant think of his name, is from Belleville.

The rapper that does the song "Everybody in the club getting tips" or whatever, he is from Belleville. He went to the same junior high school i did. Im a few years older though, and its a 2 year school, so i wasnt there when he was. As a matter of fact, he probably went after they built the new one.
