Who here is using DVDR?

Just wondering about this technology for storing movie backups and archiving old databases. Is this a good technology for these tasks? Is the DVDR compatible with most DVD readers? What should one look for when shopping for DVDR? What issues with the media should I expect? What is the cost of the DVDR media? Do CDRs work in DVDR burners?

Can't I have it all?

Unfortunately, no. While combinations DVD-RAM and DVD-R/DVD-RW do exist, currently there are no drives capable of burning to both DVD+R/DVD+RW and DVD-R/DVD-RW discs.

The anandtech FAQ's in this case are dated and wrong. There is a sony drive which will write to DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW.

FAQs more than a few months old are too outdated when it comes to hardware. Alot changes in 3-6 months.

I'm using a Hewlett Packard DVD200i DVD Burner. It burns DVD+R/RW at 2.4x.

I haven't really used it to backup data yet. I've mainly been using it to make copies of movie DVDs. For copying DVDs, it's pretty easy once you read the guides and understand how to use the software at Doom9. It took me about 3-4 attempts before I got it right and I've now been copying movies for about 1 month and am pretty good at it.

Backing up movies can be tricky depending on the size of the movies. You usually have one of the following scenarios: You can make a perfect copy, you can only fit the main movie, you have to split the movie onto 2 DVDR disks, or you have to re-encode the movie at a lower bitrate to make the movie fit.

The DVD+R disks I use to copy movies have played in every DVD Player I've used thus far. I've tried them on about 5 DVD Players and on a Playstation2.

The cost of DVD+R media right now is about $2.00 - $3.00 per disc. It just depends if there is a sale that week.

MY DVD burner supports burning to CDRs. I've never actually used it though. I have a Plextor CD burner that I use for CD burning.

By the way, if you can't decide whether to go with DVD+ or DVD- standard, I suggest you buy one of the new Sony DVD Burner's that supports burning to both standards. Last week Dell was selling them for about $250.00 after discounts. Dell usually has good discounts every few weeks, just wait for another one to come around.
