And if you have do you believe in the importance of listening for radio signals?

If you believe why do you crack RC5 instead of SETI@home?

If you do the SETI@home is there a way to get it to process more when your computer is not been used for anything else?

I've seen it, but I don't know about listening for radio signals. I will say its better to do something proactive than to sit on our hands and wait.

I don't SETI anymore, multiple reasons, but to answer your q about getting more out of SETI, it will use all available resources on a secondary basis. what I mean is that if no other program is running, it will use all it can, until something needs resources, then it gives them up. if you screen saver is set to off, and you don't have a bunch of background programs running, then you are probably getting all you can out of it.

I have no screensaver and while I am unpacking from my move I am not running anything except AIM and Black Ice and it has taken about 5 hours to do 10% of a data block on a machine with an AMD K6-2 500Mhz chip and 256 mbs of ram.

I was rather disappointed in the movie.

I don't think listening for 'alien' radio signals will hasten any kind of contact.

I do crack RC5; cetainly not for the lottery-like chance of winning $1,000, but for the 'team' effort. If you believe in SETI, fine - I have no objections.

Secondly, I believe there is a way to enhance processing. The guys in Distributed Computing would know for sure.

I've seen Contact and it is a good movie, although long, a great movie to say the least.

Yes, I crack rc5. Our RC5 team needs MUCH more help than we have right now. SETI@home is also extremely important and needs more members. We all need to get our friends on Team Anandtech ! I don't see TA as a RC5 vs SETI thing, I see it as TA with a combined effort to dominate all distributed computing efforts, to show off to the world our power.

Good luck, all.

i saw contact more than once. I dont think you can really hear "data" that was pure BS. i think that they had an article up on the web when the movie came out about that. I crack rc5 since i'm cracking under team anandtech. Also the seti people i heard wouldn't let people code optimized clients for 3dnow! or something so i never tried it. I thought the movie was ok

I saw the movie, well actually I fell asleep, but I do SETI. Only because at another site I hang out at got a group together so I joined up. I'm not sure about an AMD k6-2 but my Katmai 550 does a unit in 7- 7:30 while my PIII 700@868 does them in 5:30.

Don't have much running on my 700 except Zone alarm. If I play Half-life for to long it will add up to an hour to my times. :(

we have Contact on DVD.
fairly good movie

I didn't care for the actor that played the preacher guy, not a very convincing performance.

that Jake Busey character that blew up the tower scared the sh*t out of me, so I wouldn't want them to ever find any alien signals
