I'm in the process of applying for my passport for my trip to China this summer, but I plan on taking several out of country trips in the near future. Will this one passport accomplish the task or do I have to get a new one for each trip?

And if I dont need a new one each time, what exactly does this passport allow me to do? Can I come and go out of most any country as I please, or do I still need to get visas and stuff like that?

Thanks

A passport allows you to go into any US embassy and prove without a doubt "I am a US citizen, you must allow me entry"

Also it is a federal document and trumps just about all else.

You can come and go into any country as you please depending on that country you are trying to enter.

Everybody should have a passport.

most countries accept the passport however there are some that require visa like Spain. Its best to check with the passport office as to what country requires what before travelling. A passport is good for 5 years and if you have been convicted of a crime you will need to get a pardon before they will issue one.

A passport proves that you are a citizen of a country. It lasts for 10 years. A visa is required to visit certain countries. For example for China you can get single or double visit visas, 90 day visas, or longer. It's basically permission from a foreign country for you to visit.

Each country makes its own rules about entry to non-citizens. Some require visas and some do not. You'll have to check the rules for each country.

the passport is basically your ticket into a country, that will work for any country. dont' need to get a new one, only time you have to do that is when it expires.

But i dont' think you can just "go into ANY" country. some require you to have a visa which bascially states your purpose for being there (ie business, tourism, etc.)

Well, the misinformation is piling up quickly in this thread, so just go to travel.state.gov and look up the answers to your questions.

No, but I'm going to need one real soon. Because evidently, a birth certificate, SIN card, driver's license, and health card aren't enough to prove that I'm a Canadian citizen.

However, I only need 3 of the aforementioned 4 to get a passport.

Figure that one out. :p

What ever you do, don't lose it! If you do, contact the gov't and nearest embassy ASAP so that you can get back to US and so no one can steal your (valid) passport number to gain illegal entry somewhere else.

I was in spain for a period of 80 days two years ago, and i needed nothing more than my passport
For most western european countries, the rule of thumb is if you are staying for more than 90 days, you need some sort of permission, like in the form of a visa.

Passports are good for at least 10 years

Are you just making stuff up?!

US passports are highly sought by thieves abroad, so be very careful to protect yours while traveling.

You only need one passport but multiple visas. A visa shows that you have permision to enter a country and its stamped, taped or pasted onto your passport with certain date limitations.

Spain does not require a visa, atleast for US/canadian citizens.
