Who here has a Canon 5D, or is waiting to get one, or is getting one?

I've got a month-long trip overseas coming up on May the 8th, and I'd like to upgrade the ol' XT for the occasion. Just wanted to get some input on when the best time to buy would be.

Canon currently has their Double Rebates thing. The 5D rebates offer a maximum of $600 off, and expire mid-January. I'm assuming that they won't have another rebate deal between this rebate and when I leave for my trip, so I guess I have to buy the 5D now... or should I still wait? Is Canon expected to release a new FF camera between now and May?

Just go ahead and get it. If you end up not liking it... I will take it off your hands and can offer at least 50% of what you paid for it. ;) So you won't be out too much money.

Looking at ths pics in your sig... sell some prints man and pay for that camera!

I've had one since Feb. I upgraded from the original Rebel. I don't drive so a car comparison wouldn't work but I know audio and it's like going from Bose to Duntech. :D

Obviously the biggest discussion of this camera is the full frame sensor. Don't skimp on glass or you will regret it. Like a good set of headphones revealing flaws in a recording, the body will do the same with the glass. And it gets expensive! :Q

It would definitely be a good camera for your level of skill/experience! Go for it! :)

I'm hoping to get the camera for around $2100. I don't feel the 30D is a large enough jump for me :(

I'm basically debating between a 5D or a used 1DMKII.

Canon should relase its successor in February or so. They will continue to offer incentives on the 5D before then. I would imagine that early next year would be a good time to buy one, perhaps right after the release of its successor.

I too want to go FF but will wait for the next-gen cam to see where Canon goes.

The problem is the current double rebates.

I plan to get the 5D and something else to get a whopping $600 of rebates for the 5D. Sure, I can wait, but I'm not sure if they will consider to offer incentives of this magnitude between now and May. Seeing how their triple and double rebates have been, they're probably not going to have another one of these rebate things for a while to come, perhaps not until June, and there's no guarantee the 5D will have a rebate. And even if a successor does come out, I don't think the 5D is going to drop that much in price, certainly not by $600.

If you'd rather not purchase it from Dell, then that is fine. Dell deal is working if you don't mind a little leg work. Just not going to find it cheaper.

Auto 15% off, stackable 10% off, Dell dpa 3% off.

My dad bought a 5D last year and he LOVES IT TO DEATH. It's his favorite thing in the whole world. I haven't seen it yet but it must be pretty awesome if he raves about it the way he does.

Oh wow, you're right. I thought that deal was dead.

Looks like I can get an extra 2% off from Fatwallet Cashback, and 1% by using a cash back credit card. Have it shipped to a friend in a non-taxed state, get it shipped to me, and I should be good to go :)

here are some speculated specs on the new 5d

actually a few cameras coming out

We just have one reader e-mail us and writes that the new Canon DSLR cameras will have the new DIGIC III Image Processor , Anti-Dust, lower noise with higher ISO (>3200), and better dynamic range.

So based on this, he continues to write?

Canon EOS 30D sucessor is rumored to have these following specs:

EOS 35D/40D
* 12MP
* Improved sensor as described above. Not the same as the one in the 400D.
* DIGIC III
* Still 5 FPS
* More AF points and faster and more accurate AF.
* Anti-Dust
* 1.6X Crop Factor
* Price: US$1300

Canon EOS 5D sucessors are rumored to have these following specs:

Higher-end 5D (EOS 3D?):
* 16 MP full frame sensor
* ISO 6400, boost-able to 12800
* DIGIC III
* More & Improved AF points (Eye controlled AF?)
* 5 FPS
* Anti-dust
* Price: higher than the current 5D

Lower-end 5D (EOS 5D Mk II?):
* 12 MP full frame sensor
* ISO 6400, boost-able to 12800
* DIGIC III
* Improved AF points
* 5 FPS
* Anti-Dust
* Price: about the same or slightly lower than the current 5D

Well ?.. Let?s just wait and see..

Not to hijack this thread but since it's about the 5D I have a question.

I have the sensor cleaned and now the pics are perfect but I have another problem. It appears something is on the viewfinder glass ABOVE the top element (hence unreachable). There's a release clip that allows the fresnel to swing down and all those elements are clean including the pane above but the spec of dust is clearly above this pane and the only solution appears to have the camera sent in for service. :(

Or is this disassembly possible by the end user?

This does NOT affect pictures in any way, it's purely cosmetic and shows when looking through the viewfinder.

No you cannot. Above post has been edited. It's a toss-up between 2% DPA or 1% cash back + an extra year of warranty. I chose the latter.

so what are the chances of them rejecting the rebate for a second camera?

and if there is a 3rd camera, can that get a $600 rebate?

and what item should be used to double the rebate? i'm thinking speedlite

My good friend recently picked one up, AMAZING camera.

Paired with his 70-200 2.8, its like a tank.... So buttery smooth, yet so robust...

You have to buy two different things. So if you buy two 5Ds, you can only collect $300 on one of them. If you buy a 5D and a 17-40mm, you can collect $600 on the 5D and $90 on the 17-40mm. If you buy a 5D and a 30D, you'd get $600 on the 5D and $200 on the 30D.

There have been numerous stories of people having rebate issues. Fill these out, scan them, print out a copy, save a copy to the HDD, mail these with delivery confirmation, maybe even insurance, and set your alarm clock or pocket pc or scheduler software to pop up a notification after 60 days that says "HAVE YOU GOTTEN YOUR CANON REBATES YET?!!?!?!"

If you buy three cameras, you have to select the two that you want to redeem for a double rebate.

As for what item, it's your choice. I was looking at lenses:

Pentax 50mm f/1.4 Super Takumar - $60
or
Canon 50mm f/1.4 - $300 new - $40 double rebate or $250 used

Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 - $650 used

Canon 17-40mm - $660 - $90 rebate new or $500 used eBay
or
Sigma 15-30mm - $425 Sigma4Less

As for the flash, the Sigma 500DG Super is a good alternative flash.
