My mom used to drink 3 or 4 coffees in the morning (1 from home, then 3 throughout the day) before she realized that they did jack sh!t so now she's only drinking about 1. 😛

I get them. The worst part for me is the floaty flashy lights, the hand and mouth numbness, and the lack of coordination, all at the same time. Excedrine does fine for me, the headache part doesn't get that bad and light doesn't bother me much, if I catch it early. The worst ones are when I'm asleep, and don't get the Ex. in time - those get bad.

OP - did any of your parents/grandparents have migraines? My mom and her dad both did when they were in their 20's, but not later.

I got my first one in class in 7th grade and the principal thought I had taken drugs because I was vomitting, was very pale, and couldn't see out of my right eye. And the headache to follow was crushing!

THANK GOD tho I grew out of most of them by the end of my teens, and I haven't had one in 10 years.

What triggers your migraines? For me, it's either really bright light, or, oddly, staring at a sheet of paper for too long (especially odd colored paper, yellow, pink, etc)

There was one prescription drug that I took that worked...just one out of numerous ones I tried, as long as I took it within the first 1/2 hour of getting the eye swirls.

Unfortunately I have never been able to remember which medication that was, but I guess the moral is to try different ones if they're really bad.

About an hour or so before I get one I have trouble focusing on one object. As soon as that happens I take 2 liquid gels and lie down and I am usually asleep for a few hours and wake up with a minor headache.

Actually, caffeine helps me get rid of mine.

I've tried to figure out what causes this for years. It appears to be completely random. The doctor says I'm fine, not sure about that though. 🙂

I get them fairly often. My neurologist told me to take two 500mg Bayer aspirin and an extra strength tylenol when I feel like I'm going to get one. I usually then lay down for about an hour or so and when I wake up it is completely gone. Sometimes the sleeping isn't even necessary, which is kind of nice at work. I don't know if it would work for you but it would definitely be worth a shot.

I just recently started getting them myself. I'm lucky that I get the warning sign of the visual weirdness about an hour before the headache starts. I've had three to date, and they get pretty bad. The headache itself isn't so bad, it's the other effects that are awful. Not only do I get the screaming headache, but I get cold and shivering, then hot and sweaty, then back and forth. I can barely stand or talk, I breath shallow and rapid, and I feel like my heart is racing.

The doctor prescribed Maxalt, but since it's from the same people that brought us Vioxx, and I read about the side effects of migraine meds, I just deal with it and try to load up on ibuprofen before it hits. The visual deal before the headache is the worst sometimes...I lose almost all vision, and all I can see are blurry flashing artifacts.

As for caffeine, it can be the trigger, but more often than not, it can help a migraine. Also, an FYI for those that use Excedrin "Migraine"...check the label. It's EXACTLY the same dosage of aspirin, acetaminophen, and caffeine as the normal Excedrin extra strength...don't be suckered.

🙂
