Who here gets bloody noses? Need some knowledge.

my 4 year old daughter had a pretty bad bloody nose this morning. Not sure how it happened and it was her first one. I have never had one, nor has my wife so we were a little perplexed on how/why she got it. I was able to stop it and according to my nanny she didn't have one the rest of the day.

Well, tonight we were getting ready for bed and I was playing around with her and had her upside down. I wasn't swinging her or shaking her, just had her upside down, when the blood starting streaming out again. It took some time but we got it stopped. And for a four year old, she didn't cry once, she's so much mentally stronger than her older brothers (note to self: beat some strength into older brothers). Any case, can anyone shed some light on:

What would have caused it?

How long before it fully heals and I don't have to worry about it starting just by playing with her?

Should I be overly concerned that this is happening to a 4 year old? I know it happens to many people, so at this time I am not panicking.

Any home remedies that might help mitigate the problem?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You've NEVER had a nosebleed? :Q I get them all the time... most of the time it's cause of the dryness of the air or allergies, blood vessels dry out and crack... it shouldn't be anything to worry about. Just make sure she tilts he head foreward and pinches her nose for a few minutes until it stops. If it is coming out of both nostrils, it could be something more serious.

Foreward? Not backward? I thought it was always backward. And seriously, I have never had a nosebleed and, more impressively, I haven't thrown-up since I was 7. I am now 33. 😀

i used to get them when i was younger
it is usually worse when it is cold/dry

i think it is just blood vessels close to the surface inside the nose and the dry air causes them to pop easy

just be careful for a day or two after she has one

she will probably grow out of it

It's forward - they found out that tilting your head backward can cause soem problems - paranoid? Dunno. Safer to tilt forward just in case? You bet. 😉

Yeah, it's foreward now. They used to teach backwards, but now it is forewards to prevent blood from running down the throat.

me ever since i got plastic nose reconstructive surgery auto accident, to fix the problem I need another one but I refuse

I get nosebleeds here and there. once every few weeks... comes out of the blue... or if my finger is up there.. but mainly it's cause of the dry. whenever the humidity in the house is really low, i can get them.

I haven't had once since I was really little. It seems to be common amongst kids.

Not to be gross here but a lot of it has to do with the fact that they pick their nose. Most kids grow out of it. Just be really calm about it so you don't scare the child and just try to reinforce the whole idea about not picking your nose and see if it continues.

Hopefully it goes away soon! 🙂

did she pick her nose? some people have blood vessels very down in the nostrils simply by picking nose can cause bleeding

My nose once bled on and off for four days. Of course, this was while I was wrestling back in highschool. Turns out that I had a pretty good gash on the inner tip of my nose. Every time anything touched the tip of my nose, it would start bleeding again.

As for the tilt forward/backward question, it really depends on what you want to do. If you don't mind swallowing your blood, tilt it back. It won't come out all over the place, but it will drip down the back of your throat. If you don't like that idea, then tilt forward, but it will come out all over the place. Either way, the blood has to move because the site has to clot.

Again, she swears she didn't pick her nose.

I think it is probably the air dryness issue. We have had some funky weather down here in Houston lately, with it getting pretty cold, which means pumping up the heat in the house, which then drys the air.

Put a humidifier in her room, or buy a few and put a couple in the other parts of the house.

I almost never get one, and usually it's the result of an accident. I live in the high desert, so it's really dry here.
Can't say any of my kids have every had one that wasn't a result from one of the other kids.

I get bloody noses all the time. They heal in two or three days. Don't put extra pressure on her blood vessels in her nose for a few days (i.e. don't turn her upside down or anything).

And to silence the peanut gallery before it begins: I sometimes get bloody noses after sneezing, blowing my nose, washing my face without being extra careful about moving my nose around, and sometimes just by breathing too hard. I've also got them when I'm asleep. I have no idea how that happens, but I usually wake up when the blood trickles down my cheek.

I usuually get nosebleeds during the days when we first have the furnace running. It's definitely the dry air that does it to me. Maybe try a humidifier?

thin blood vessels in the nasal cavity usually cause this unless something hasppened to cause this. as for the second one, i would say that having her upside down did it. caused excessive blood pressure in her head.

Last week I was getting nose bleeds twice a day everyday for 5 days in a row. Not sure what started it. Maybe a sinus infection, or unusually dry air. Every time I would blow my nose it would start to bleed and I'd wake up all congest4ed in the morning. Was gonna go to the doctor but it seems to have stopped now. First time it has happened to me for that many days.

I fyou have central heating on that is probably it, I am down here in corpus and it is cold. Yes I used to have nosebleeds all the time, not as much lately, changes in temp, humidity, and altitiude can do it. For me at least it was becasue I have thin blood vessels on my nose and so anything will set them off, so i spent a lot of time hunkered over the bathroom sink bleed, or with kleenex, or (my favorite) painting rocks if I was outside. Forward will let the blood drain out and form a clot, but itt tends to bleed longer, backwards it goes down you throat, which, if you have a weak stomach can cause an upset stomach. On a note either way I had no real problems forward or backward, and it is nothing to freak out about, but I would if she has a couple next time you are at the doctor, ask them about it.

My brother used to get a lot of nosebleeds. Docotr said it may be a vitamin C deficiency. He started to take multivitamins with extra c (he always took a normal multi), and the nosebleeds stopped. YMMV.
