who here doesn't play games but overclocks and buys latest hardware?

I haven't really played any games for PC. The last game I played all the way through was probably Serious Sam. I've tried FarCry, Unreal T, CoD, MoH, etc. but I don't really play those games much.

Anyone here upgrade or overclock but don't really play games? I guess I'm just a hardware enthusiast because I like reading up benchmarks, reviews, etc. but never really use my gaming hardware

I did, a long time ago. Found out it wasn't so fun anymore when computer stuff depreciates so quickly. Found better things to spend on with my money. I still read the reviews, benchmarks, but am no longer in any need to actually own the things.

Yep, same with me.

I used to. Slowed down in the past few months, though... what with moving out and all, money is going to be tight and there are better toys to spend my money on.

now I'm staying about a generation behind. probably won't upgrade to a 64 bit cpu until the winter.

I used to spend a lot of money on my computer. Then I got married. 😀

I just upgraded recently to a 3GHz system because one game I installed was choking on my P4 1.6 (Silent Storm). I still enjoy playing some games, but I don't have the time to play all that much. I used to really enjoy playing multiplayer (Q3, UT, DoD), but since I moved to Japan, my connection hasn't been the best, with ping times measured in seconds. 😉

I don't play games or buy the latest hardware, but I overclock. There's more to it than that.

It's having a piece of hardware and knowing how to use/tweak it. That's where the satisfaction comes from for me, not because of 10 extra fps.

I used to do it. I started with my Celery 333 and worked with a few other processors and video cards. I got pretty bad with overclocking though. I was so convinced that with the proper hardware, I could get a lossless 40 - 50% performance gain just by overclocking. I ended up wasting my time running benchmark after benchmark. Never ending fine tuning between reformats and reinstalls due to overdone overclocks. At the end of the day, I had played no games at all, watched several hours with of benchmarks, and my case sounded like a leaf blower while the innards cooked away. Whenever I DID game, I rarely saw the rewards of my efforts.

I finally snapped out of it about a year ago, after watching repeated Windows installs go to dust from over zealous overclocks. Since building my latest system, I run everything stock. I mostly go the opposite way now, lowering voltages as much as I can (safely.) Then trying to lower my cooling to quiet the PC. I've been running this install of Windows for about 8 months now, (probably a record for me), and all my free time goes to gaming instead of tooling around with sliders, multipliers, and re-installing Windows.

I love the 'Future System Specs' lists....people need to stop dreaming and get my super-sized fries ready.

same except I really don't read the reviews that much, it is upsetting when you buy a high end piece of equipment and then a month later you *have* to upgrade and your old part is worth nothing, heck I have had toys and other items that held their value better than any PC component I have purchased.

I rarely game, but do lots of digi photosvideos & burn DVD's & overclock...

Trying really hard to ignore Newegg's combo with AMD's Athlon 64 2800/mb combo for ~$220 shipped, have it in my cart, will prob order it today...

Thats teh way that I feel too. Ive moved from overclocking for games to overclocking for performance in photoshop and flash.

It's just a useless hobby and one that most people grow out of after a couple of years, because it's really very restrictive in what you can actually do. You buy the best vid card, the best CPU, and now suddenly all you can do is mod your case. It gets boring.
