I'd guess most people who are unemployed will check in... If I lost my job, I'd probably stop paying for coverage.

Would you stop paying for cable? Cell phone?
The reason why I ask is I see people going to 0 health care coverage much quicker than cutting some other non essentials, despite the fact that basic coverage costs about the same amount.

Cite your source on health care cost = to cable or cell phone cost. My cable bill was about $40/mo before I canceled it and my cell phone is $45/mo. WTF kind of coverage can you get for that price?

If I lost my job, yes I would cut cable. I could steal wi-fi, and could live with an HD Antenna. I haven't watched a "premium" non-local station in over a year.
When I wasn't working, Sprint let me go on a "lifeline" plan, which was less than $20 per month AFTER taxes. I also had TV through a direct-connect cable, but I did pay for internet. I'd cut that in a minute if I had to though.

Up until approximately HS, we only had catastrophic coverage (hospitalization level). My parents just paid for everything out of pocket (well using a medical savings account, probably precursor to what is available thru now). In HS, college and grad school we had coverage through my uncle's company. Then I graduated last December and got a high deductible plan designed for people in their 20s Tonik. $82/month. Had that coverage up until July, then went 7 days without paying the premium (uninsured!!!) until job started.
Interesting NY Times article or is this what provided your inspiration?
If I got laid off, I'd probably "move in" with my sister in CA and get the Tonik product again.
