You know who says IT is a great place to be? People that have been in IT for less than 5 years. It's a job that really is bad for your mental health.
Think about it -- nobody calls you unless you need to fix something. It makes you fear interacting with people because you feel they're going to need something from you. You spend your entire life helping other people, while nobody fixes your own problems but yourself.
After 12 years, it really started to get to me, so I had to get out. I moved to a technical writing/adviser position and am enjoying it much more. I get to be creative, less stress, and I feel like I'm doing something that will last rather than patching holes.
You are talking about help desk / support roles. That's really low-end IT...the goal like you did should be to move to a more key facilitating role. I also have experience most businesses have so many problems due to a faulty infrastructure being put into place and/or IT people that are incompetent or simply lazy.
I am a consulting engineer, I build things rather than sit waiting for trouble tickets. I did do that in the recent past, but that was never my full role.
Also I do agree when you are in IT everyone thinks you are help desk for them and all their friends and family. I used to be a lot more helpful, but today I don't have much time. I do know many that do this on the and always have a phone number I can extend.
When I did do this I always made sure there was some kind of compensation or trade of something else I needed attached.
I have been in full IT roles since 2000.
