I checked home VM and it said my sister has been selected in the cash/car giveaways you find often in shoppinng malls.
I was bit skeptical but she stated in what month and where the drawing had occured and it is likely that my sister actually did put one ticket in there.

problem is that she didn't clearly state her # and so I'd have to try several combination of phone numbers to get to her.

and it's been about 2 weeks since she left the message and I wonder what the claiming period is.

crossing my fingers for this one. !!

Better hurry, that five dollar gift cert to the "Plus Size Women's Fashions Barn" won't spend itself.

I got one of those. They ended up telling me I didnt win the car but I *did* win some sort of secondary prize. It was all BS.

I have found those are just ways to get your mailing address/name and get sent a LOT of spam snail mail...I haven't heard anyone actually winning these things.

Promotions of that nature generally just serve as a free mailing/contact list for that company. They usually find a way out of giving the prize away. In my experience anyway.

"you're now eligible for a free dinner at red lobster and a weekend stay at a fabolous resort including travel. now to claim your prize all you have to do is spend a few spare hours on saturday morning just so we can talk to you about all the other great services our company offers, with no obligation whatsoever to purchase anything. and like i said all it'll cost you is just a small bit of your time..."

you've won a chance to win the car. something like that, it tends to always be shady, if you win you win and they won't give you a run around about it. i've gotten such a call before, it doesn't take long before asking questions makes them dodge in a way that you know its scammy.

Actually I've had some nice vacations at those places. The trick is to show No Interest Whatever during the sales presentation. No arguing or saying nasty things, just being very disinterested, but polite. You get good at it after a while.

back in the mid 90s at the auto show, my coworker & her husband won a pair of new Saturns.. they traded them in for 1 nicer Saturn.

but, never put your info on those sweepstakes at restaurants & malls - the big scam in the 90s was to add language on the reverse side that you agree to have your long distance switched to ABC-screw me service.

it's time share,

you have a chance to win the car and other prizes but you have to go to a time share demonstration. sucks up half your day but you usually walk away with something for your time. last one i did, got a trip to vegas with airfare + hotel (@ hilton) for 3 days for 2, just have to pay attention to blackout dates. the demo was in napa and the provided wine and food.

edit: there are some very very bad ones there also we've just been lucky. friend actually bought the Hilton timeshare (based in vegas) and you can use your time anywhere there's a hilton. went to hawaii last year and this year went snowboarding in Whislter, just had to pay for plane ticket.

I put my name in for a drawing for a Dodge Viper about 10 years ago. Apparently I was the *only* person to actually fill out the form and drop it in the box. Dude who called a few weeks later said I wasn't allowed to continue in the drawing because I wasn't age 26 or older :(

pretty sure i remember they asked if there was someone older than 40 or something ridiculous in my household when i started asking questions.

theres probably no age limit like that on the real raffle. just an out for the scammer if they figure its a dead end.

It's a trap!

The cops are just trying to get you to come in so they can serve an arrest warrant on you.

i think it's of those time share presentations you won, but they might get some tickets or whatever out of it.

I used to sign up for those car giveaways at our mall, but then I started getting calls saying i won a secondary prize. I asked what, and it was a set of steak knives that comes with a presentation on water purification by some door to door company rep...complete waste of time.
