The editing software that comes with any printer should not be expected to do anything beyond getting you started. I suggest that you never install any of it.
I have used many photo editing programs. I now find that Picasa 2 (free from google) handles 99.5% of my needs, and does it easier and faster than any program I've ever used. For editing it does cropping, lighting changes (very good too), tint changes, rotations, and prints selected photos at a size of your choosing laid out on 8 1/2 X 11 paper.
For more involved editing I use Adobe photo elements 2.0, a lighter version of Photoshop that last I checked went for $40 or comes with Canon Lide scanners.
For fun projects such as greeting cards, brochures, flyers, and labels I've found Print shop deluxe hard to beat. This includes some light photo editing also.
