how do you guys know without havign first hand accounts...besids i dont think anyone want to mess with the mexican drug cartels..which are right now what id call the mexican mafia

ruthless and rich.....

but the worst would go to the medillon cartel.....when u have the money and power to hold the country at bay

look at the documentary..killing pablo escobar...he took out a jet to kill on person....now thats ruthless...and the usa had to help bring him in and even then he eluded them for a long time

Old world Mafia is the Sicilian Mafia (which is where they originated, not Italy). They still hold to the "omerta" code, which literally means "silence". In other words, don't talk to the cops, go to the Mafia to get something settled. Sicily has a loooooooong history of fighting against Italian control, and the Mafia is/was part of that.

Ya, didn't you guys just lose the local "terrorize your local sheriff" contest to the sub-Mafia in Iowa?

Old World Italian mafia (La Cosa Nostra) is the mafia that operates in Sicily/Italy. New world mafia is the mafia that started in NYC and spread all over North America.

In terms of ruthlessness and wanton violence, old school mafia is much worse. I've heard stories where they follow tourists from the rental car agency onto open roads, and when there's no traffic they'll run them off the road and kill them for their money/belongings. American mafia doesn't do this kinda thing...they typically stick to killing people who are involved in bad business deals or other gang members.

Don't they all where trenchcoats in the movies? LOL.

It was the nickname for the two kids that shot up Columbine High School. :(

BAH! Why even honor them with a name. They were just punks with emotional disorders, not an organized crime syndicate.

Well, since we've all got extensive ties to the mafia here on Anandtech Off Topic, I feel fully qualified to say that, although the Russian mafia is badass, the old school Italians were the "baddest".

Just my completely informed opinion from first hand experience. ;)

the old world italians had it down pat. they just didnt figure out how to keep things on the downlow when times changed.

the best mafia(s) are the ones that you dont hear about, but know exist. Thats talking in todays terms. Old school it was about presence.

That history page taught me the Yakuza were a bunch of bums and gamblers. I got bored after reading that far. Someone (I'd prefer someone who doesn't have yellow fever) to explain why the Yakuza is crazy.

By popular request, I've added the Turks, the Pollocks, and a secret society for good measure.
