I live on a small lot...around .3 acres. I am a 1/3rd owner of around 50 acres (approx 10 cleared/field, 40 forest) that is 300 or so miles from my house.

40 acres of commercial pine forest, bought from Weyerhaeuser. First culling in 2 years to clear space for a house, garden, pond, whatever, and the trees culled will be sold for pulp to pay for the clearing. 15 years later, harvest whatever trees I want to sell and pay for the price of buying the land. Theoretically.

18 acres, adjacent to 7500 acres of state forest. Nice stream running down toward the back of my property. Maple trees for syrup. About 3/4 wooded, the rest pasture for the goats. The state forest contains land that belonged to farms many years ago. Several apple orchards on the land. Only a couple of us pick apples. I occasionally hunt on my land, but more often, I'm at my in-laws 50 acres. Both sons rent houses on significant parcels of land - 7 acres and 400 acres that they (and I) can hunt on.

Ive got ~20 acres. About 5 wooded, 12 hayfield and 3 fenced pasture. We have horses, and chickens. We also have 15 apple trees and a bunch of other fruit: wild plum, cherry, blueberries and current bushes. This was on old homestead where the original house burned down, and the barn got taken out by a tornado. So lots of old buildings and empty foundations.

We have 20 acres here about 20 minutes west of Indianapolis that our home is on. The home is on about five acres with a huge beautiful 20 stall barn that had been an army barracks in Indy during WWII. It was sold at auction in the 1950s and trucked piece by piece out here, assembled, and stalls were installed. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to use it for its original purpose for various reasons...it's currently used for storage :-(

The rest of the land is leased to a local farmer. This year it had corn on it, last was soybeans.

We also own 12 acres in New Jersey that my mother raises goats and chickens on. It backs up to a beautiful large creek.

I think you need to rethink your question. Only a suburbanite would think 5 acres is a 'huge' lot. Where I am, that's a pretty small one.

How is it owning land that far away? Do you get out there and enjoy it much? I've been thinking about trying to buy some land with a little bit of terrain and a lot of trees, but it'd probably have to be around 50 miles from here, so I can't decide it that is worth it.

To be honest, I haven't set my eyes on it in probably 15 years. Neither have the other owners. We inherited it. Not only is it 300 miles away, it's really in the middle of nowhere...there is nothing else near it that would entice me to take that trip.

I'll need to look into the adverse possession laws a little more. It makes no sense that anyone could claim land if we hold the deed and have paid the taxes on it every year.

13 acres. Driveway is 1/4 mile (I can count on my hand the number of times I've walked to the end of the drive to get the mail.)

I used to lease a hay field on 4 acres, but the farmer never kept up well enough to make a profit.

Speaking of having all this property...this thread got me thinking again about possibly having some of the trees on our 40ish acres of forest harvested and sold. Has anyone here ever done that, dealt with a forestry consultant, etc?

When my MIL owned our property, she hired a logger to cut down and remove about a dozen dead pine trees in exchange for letting him take a few old oaks, too.
He wanted to make it sound like there was only money in the hardwoods but I never investigated how much if any.
