That's because there's no Sarge's that play any prominence on The Shield. Detectives do all the investigating.

no...its a rank. Detectives are over all foot police...but I think Sarges can boss the Dects around...Sarge isint out in the field IIRC

b/c detectives can be plainclothed to do their investigating. Sarge's handle the officers themselves, no need to not be in uniform.

Detectives don't usually wear uniforms and they seem higher than officers, but i know a friend that was NYPD and he retired with a sergeant rank and would patrol.

It looks like some sergeants control the patrol officers and some the detectives in the special units.

Sergeants are usually the shift supervisors, overseeing the patrol officers, until you get the calls where the big cheese's decide to step out of the office and stick their nose where it doesn't belong.

yes...

but it is a step up from the uniforms... but high ranking uniforms can still pull rank on a detective.

Sergeants are higher than Detectives, as Detectives are often Officer-grade.
