Who has built a VMware ESX server?

I'm looking to build an ESX 4 for home. For training and other stuff. I know that ESX is picking on hardware (sata, nics, cpu).

So has any built one before and what did you use? I'm looking at using a amd quad 4, 8gb ram, 1tb drive.

I know vmware has a compatibility guide, but there is hardware that's not on there that will work. And it's tough to get a MB with all the parts listed on their guide.
