Who has been to Taiwan?

I am going there to see my wifes family. I'll be there for 8 days, any cool places in Taipei to see? Markets to buy season box sets, computer hardware, etc?

Thanks!

IIRC, there's like one or two main "night markets" in Taipei, not sure exactly where they are though since my parents just told me which subway train to get on and which to get off. I bet if you ask anyone they'd be able to tell you. There're places to buy box sets just about everywhere, and computer hardware is actually the same price if not more expensive than here in the states. That's one thing I found strange, but maybe if you dig deep enough you can find stuff that, how you say, fell off the truck? 😉. If you find anything on the street, be sure to haggle with the vendors.

btw, welcome to ATOT, unless you've been a long time lurker and just surfaced for this first post

Ive worked in Taipei many years ago, went to the convention center where they had an electronics fair going on, that is seasonal though. I would ask a cabbie where to go for shopping since they know all ths spots..

Yeah, finding/hearing about higher prices inn countries that make a lot of our goods is what I hear a lot. Sometimes, when you buy from them online and ship to USA you won;t pay a VAT or anything and then its cheaper.

the biggest is the shilin night market i think. just get off at the shilin subway stop.

AVOID bootleg CD vanders on the street. High school kids holding folders with apges printed with names of programs, movies. They will try to sell you worthless CD that supposedly contained thousands of dollars worth of software -- it is of course a scam.

Clubs in Taiwan:

Room18
DV8
Kiss
Hot Gossip

... i'm sure I've went to more =\ There really isn't much to do in Taipei unless you're really into clubs, bars, shopping, and overpriced restaurants.

Taipei 101 is currently the tallest skyscraper in the world. You might wanna visit that building, and take a coupla pictures of it.

I know the night markets are great. Where in Taiwan are you staying? Tai zhong is awesome, the food is great, and the people are amazing. Except when they steal from your house at night. =].

Are you Taiwanese too or a white guy taking our asian ladies?

i dunno if this is true, but I also heard that the girls there adore americans, especially when in a club or something. I dunno how old you are, and I know you're married, but it's something to do 😀

I'm married. She's in Taipei and thats why I am going there! So, no extra fun for me anymore.

I'll check out those clubs and what not. I know we have a bunch of trips planned to go into the interior of the island as well.

I was there a week ago. Name brand stuff cost more in Taiwan then in the US because of VAT. As soogiebro has mentioned, definately check out Taipei 101, but the top floors are not open to the public yet. They do have a kick ass Subway. One more thing, you can get an hour massage for $7.00 us. If you're looking for DVD's China is the place to be not Taipei. Have fun.
