Who has been to Myrtle Beach?

Going there this summer for a week - my wife, my 9 year old daughter and myself. Other than the obvious (the beach), what else should we try to do while there? If anyone can give me hotel recommendations also, that would be greatly appreciated. We have an idea of where we want to stay, but I'd like to hear other options and maybe I'll get lucky and find someone that has stayed at the places we are considering.

I went last summer and had a great time down there. We stayed at the Marriott Resort which has a pretty big outdoor pool, steps away from the beach.

We went to the tourist spots, Boardwalk at the Beach, The Market Common, and some Golf.

I would recommend going to eat at Bone Fish Grill and order the Bang Bang Shrimp App.

Putt Putt, lots of Putt Putt. Good stuff, not your run of the mill crap. There used to be the pavilion but word on the street is its been long gone (shows how long its been since I've been in MB).

I haven't been there in about 14 years. I'm sure it's been built up alot since then. MB is basically like any other beach/tourist town in the south. Lots of great mini-golf, some good water parks, shopping, good eats, and water parks. I always went for the beach, so that's where I spent most of my time.

The funny thing is that now that I live by the ocean, I hardly ever go.

I went last summer and it's not bad. The beach side water park was pretty cool though the amusement park across the street kind of sucked. We rented a house and I highly recommend it. It was in a large community on the beach but can't think of the name to save my life. We had a three bedroom two bath for ~$1200. About what you would pay for a hotel suite for a week. It wasn't ocean from but it was just a couple streets back. It is an enclosed community that rents golf carts so just jump on one and your there. They also had their own pool and putt putt. It isn't cheap but is worth it over a hotel IMHO.

It's a nice place, but it's really in decline. Some areas are getting downright scary. We switched to Hilton Head last year. More upscale but less things for kids to do

It is the golf mecca of the universe, both in putt putt and regulation courses.

It's not a sight-seeing place, but you weren't trying hard enough if you didn't find anything fun to do or good to eat. Good eats all over, and there's quite a bit of fun. Not necessarily like adventure-style fun, but little things that can provide some fun days.

Some nice water parks, lots of golf (both miniature golf (putt-putt is shamed by these places) and full, excellent courses), lots of nice beach.
Some excellent ocean-specific things like fishing, para-sailing, etc.

Boardwalk at the Beach is a great day trip. Lots of shopping, Margaritaville, and places like Ripley's Aquarium.

I haven't been there in, hell.... like 6 years now? Had went regularly camping down there for around 7 years in a row. Really nice campground right on the beach with golf-cart rentals just outside of Myrtle Beach proper.

Some of the better places won't really be in Myrtle Beach proper, and as someone else said, like most cities, there are some scary areas of inner Myrtle Beach.

When I was there for the summer, I was 22, so most of the stuff I was interested in isn't exactly stuff you'd find useful. The strip is fun to walk down if you enjoy watching women flash random people and seeing huge, tricked out cars cruise back and forth. The best wet t-shirt contest is at The Oasis, the worst is at Mother Fletcher's, etc...

I went for a week or so about 5 years ago. Thought it was a dump. It had all of the negatives (plus some) of the Florida panhandle beaches I was used to and almost none of the positives. Of course we were there in the time between "black biker week" and "white biker week," which may have had some bearing on the time we had.
