Who had the worse(Or better, depending on how you look at it) paper launch?

Who do you think had more of a paper launch, nVidia or ATI? I chose ATI just because you can't find any of their cards anywhere, and even on the main ATI site they are out of stock without an ETA.

Edited with when we'll see release.

ATI imo. X800 Pro is the only card in any kind of quantity and it cant compete with the GT which is finally starting to see some quantity.

Mixed feelings on this....
At this point, ATI, because you can actually buy 6800NUs and GTs pretty easily.
Agreed, but ATI did get a few X800 Pro's shipped first. Also, nVidia has moved on to announcing SLI, which won't be available for a while.

Edit: where is the "both" option in the poll?

i would say ATI, our store was able to get 2 x800 pros about 5 weeks ago and have been on backorder from 3 big wholsale vendors since (techdata, D&H, amax) one of them has the 6800 GT in stock, however long that will last...

still though i would say this is the worst paper launch by bith companies i have ever seen

At first, nVidia was worse. They paper launched first. ATi launched 2nd, and people were getting X800P and X800XT cards more readily than nVidia cards.

Now, nVidia is ahead with decent NU and GT availability.

On the high end, both are still very scarce. I've seen a few people with XTs, but the 6800U seems to still be MIA.

Both did a terrible job with this paper launch. I've never seen one this bad.

I disagree with one part of this:
It was always speculated it would take a while for there to be nVidia cards, wasn't mid June the supposed ship time?
It was said "ATI doesn't paper launch" and that there would be cards immediately following.

Oh well, it was neither companies best few months I'm sure, and unfortunately for them I believe they're both at the mercy of Samsung for memory, right?

Agree with this completely. And rollo also brings up a valid point. It isn't ALL their fault.

From what I have read, yes, the DDR3 ram is the problem they are both having. That is why the 6800NU has not been a problem. The high end stuff for the XT and U cards is tough to get.

my guess is they are speed binning the ram for the high end cards and limited production is making it a slow process.

If you go over to NVnew.net there are actually quite a few people with the Ultra's No not alot but a few. os they aren't quite MIA.

In my opinion, NV. The only reason is they paper launched 1 month before ATi did. ATi did have a (very) few X800 Pro's in customers hands the week after launching. The same can not be said for NV. ATi launched second, but had cards out first. That pretty much says it all to me.

ati, by far. The GT is in reasonable supply (if you are willing to pay MSRP), and there are $300-350 deals popping up all over the place. I don't care about the vanilla and the Ultra ATI has shipped out a bunch of slow, overpriced x800 Pros and too few XTs, which is where their best deal is at. I don't know what their intention is; perhaps they are trying to push the R500 soon.

So your saying, since Ati had a couple or "very few" as you stated out after the intitial launch they did better?

Yet Nv waited till they had enough to make a dent in the "want", and they did worse???

Does that make any sense to you?

I'm studying the history of both companies and would like to see the opinions of this community.
My opinion is that paper launches suck donkey balls no matter who does them. One month is reasonable but beyond that it's ridiculous.

NV didnt wait, they paper launched a month before ATi did. If they had waited as you said, it would have been much better to me.

I think we can all agree that the X800 Pro's and 6800 GT's are fairly easy to get right now. While the X800XT/PE's and 6800U's are harder to get. To me its the same. The only difference as I stated, is that ATi had cards out to consumers before NV, yet launched after them. As far as availablility they are about the same to me, except NV has the vanilla 6800's out, with no ATi counterpart really.

They were both pretty bad launches, for both companies. Its really not worth arguing over I dont think. It seems the whole holdup for both companies is the ram. But thats what happens when you live on the edge.

Couldn't of said it better myself! 🙂

I chose ATI based on the past couple of weeks and based on August 2nd. On August 2nd you will easily be able to get the 6800 Ultras from eVGA and I doubt you will be able to easily get the XT PEs in early August.
