Well Google used to (up until a month or so ago) provide their e-mail services for free with your domain so setting up your own domain name e-mail cost you less than $10 a YEAR. I'd say you missed the boat on that one.
It's fun for a hobby. If you work at it you can use it as a source of some extra income. Domains are pretty cheap for the initial year. It's the renewal costs that get you. If you only have a few, you can take advantage of domain transfer offers. You can usually get around 8 - 12% cashback using mrrbates/fatwallet/etc.
I don't have one and I don't know why I'd need one. I don't really talk about myself, I barely even post on Facebook. I know if I put up a website I would just never update it (if I even got around to making it in the first place).
1. One is for my (and my family members) main e-mail address(es);
2. One was for an online photo album (that I no longer update);
3. One is for my uncle's philosophy essay website.
Isn't this a tech forum? Surprising the number of people who don't own any domains.
I have like 20 or so domains... most are dormant projects or stuff that's self sufficient. I've been wanting to revive some of my sites and projects though. I can probably squeeze more money out of them if I actually put more time into them.
A friend has one of those .name domains. He's all thrilled by the fact that, for $10 a year, he has the e-mail address <his first and last name>@<his first & last name>.name. :\
