My cars are not new or nice, but they are paid for. I don't care if I was a millionare, I don't think I would ever buy a brand new car as they lose so much money the instant you buy.

same here. I can't afford a new car right now anyway but even when I can I'll still buy used. my current car is 13 years old.

Ditto.

Why buy something that is going to lose a coulpe thousand dollars in value as soon as you take it away from the store?

I honestly don't plan on buying a brand new car until I am very well off, if even at that time.

you're not buying a car as an investment, who cares if it loses money after you buy it.

You paid a set price for the car, it's not like the car is continually taking more money out of your bank account. unless you're driving a ford

2004 Mazda 3 5 door Purchase price NEW after TTL and everything 16.7k

Edmunds
Trade in: 12,900
Private: 14,200
Dealer: 15,381
CPO: 16,971

We bought this car 2 years 9 months ago(33 months), and apparently it has depreciated.... $2500 if I sell it as a private party (which I dont plan on selling it for another 7 years at earliest)

so 33 months for $2500 depreciation and no real maintenance costs.... counting the low low APR we got on it, add another $1500 by the time it is paid off in a year. I cant forsee exact depreciation in future.

We got about 4k below MSRP and close to 2k below invoice when we got it. So if you shop a good deal it is possible to buy a new car and not take a huge hit on depreciation...

I had the same car for 14 years, and I just bought a new one...

For me, I got the car well under dealer invoice, and I plan to keep it for at least ten years...how is that a bad decision again?

If you are someone who drives a car as a simple point A to point B, and don't hold on to things, then maybe it's a bad idea....otherwise...what's the big deal?

Everyone mentions resale value and depreciation, but what do I care if I'm not going to sell it?

Must be all those insightful posts over the years on ATOT criticizing every little grammar mistake huh? Is that the secret to being as smart as you?

You can live within your means and still buy a new car. I just did, and it's also paid for.

I drove my '89 Buick in to the ground and then some. I'd still be driving it if it hadn't been hit while parked on the street. Oh well, now I have a new one that I can (probably) drive forever.

You can get excellent cars for amazingly cheap if you buys used ones. I own a 1995 BMW 540i, absolutely amazing car and I got it for less than 10k.

Yup.

Time was, I had little money and lived in a big city. no car. Then we had a bit more money and moved to a small town. Cheap used car. Now we have a house and good incomes, so we good a good used car (still under 10K). Don't see any reason to spend more. Sure, newer cars are nicer, but there are so many better things to do with our money.

that's not you being smart, thats just you having different priorities. you already admitted that newer cars are nicer and some people are willing to pay more for that. that's not them being stupid, thats them having different priorities.

I got my 1997 lincoln for 7k, and I wouldn't trade it for a new car unless the new car was in the 40k + range.

I guess my main thing is I wouldn't buy a new car I didn't love. I mean, people buying a low-mid range car like a civic or focus, etc, are buying what they can afford, not what they want. They are settling for lower end cars when they could take their 18k to the used market and get something that'll really make them happy, and can be just as reliable.

I really want to buy the new Yukon Denali, but I think I'm going to hold out a bit longer and hope my car dies (1997 toyota 4runner with 175k miles)

If I'm raking in the dough I could care less about how much more a newer car is compared to a used or its depreciation rate. I'll buy what I can afford and what I want.

I paid $21k for my used gs. I could of easily gotten a brand new car with that but I would have to settle for something less which I wasn't willing to do.

Where you went wrong here is assuming that I was calling other people stupid.

[me smart] + [you different] NOT= [you dumb]

So sorry, I will have to respectfully disagree and maintain that I am smart here. If that seems like an attack, I can't help you there.
