Can we get back to food posts and pics? I honestly don't care about the definition of BBQ...

You are correct, but pedantic. Everyone knew what the OP meant.

In areas where bbq is taken more seriously, not always. Invite someone over for BBQ here and they are expecting something slow cooked by indirect heat/smoke, usually pork, but beef brisket an option.

Yep, that's fine, but BBQ != American BBQ

So while there may be a difference between to grill something and to BBQ it American Style, that doesn't mean there's a difference between grilling something and BBQ'ing it.

Bangers and mash, spotted dick, bubble and squeak. Methinks thou dost protest too much.

You invite me to "a BBQ" and toss some hotdogs on a grill, I'm going to punch you in the face for being a fucking liar.

:D

I wouldn't invite someone to a BBQ if they don't know what one is

Can you just stop fucking trolling every goddamn thread where you think there might be a semantic difference between the understood definition of a word and whatever it is that you think Americans should know?

Seriously, it's getting really fucking old and you managed to add an extra page of bullshit on your own. Stick to the fucking topic.

I pointed out the same damn thing, but when it was obvious we were all on the same topic after all, I dropped it. You continue to pursue. Why? If you're not interested in the actual topic of a thread, start your own.

Really, if you don't like what the consensus here tends to think, consider going elsewhere for discussions relevant to your interests. It really detracts from the discussion when you decide to spend the next hour posting your collateral opinions that really, honestly, don't matter at all to the topic at hand.

Cliffs:

When threads get derailed into semantic arguments, you tend to be the common element.

Read the cliffs. That's because I love semantics. They are important.

I was about to post this sort of thing, after finally realizing that I let myself dragged into more ignorant neckbeard trolling. I think I'm helping him out, trying to inform him (he keeps saying he likes to learn new things, that's why he's here), but I keep forgetting that such is truly a lie.

Then shut the fuck up in this thread and start a new one. Really, not every discussion needs to be taken in the direction that you want. Instead of talking about who cooked outside today, we're debating the semantics of a definition. Rather, you are, because you're obviously a self-centered troll.

It's not about what I want, I didn't start this debate of semantics, but if we are going to talk about "who's barbecuing today" then we at least need to all agree on what barbecuing is, otherwise we aren't having the same conversation.

I didn't start this.

If you are defining BBQing as "cooking outside" then, that's cool, that's what I'd have gone with, in which case, my answer is : I haven't had a BBQ in ages :( I wish I had they are great fun. :)

Is there no thread that neckbeard cannot troll?

I think this is a greater, deeper conundrum than "Could god microwave a burrito so hot that he himself could not eat it?"

There's no need for name calling, I'm just trying to have a conversation with you. Grow up.

see, that's the problem. You honestly seem to believe that you are having a conversation.

you are not.

for one who claims to be interested in words, in semantics, in "dictionary definitions = truth," you sure do fucking suck at understanding that one.

I did my cooking for most of the week yesterday. I barbecued two racks of baby back ribs, a whole chicken and a brisket. Good eats! I'm getting lazy though, I used the same rub on everything and used Hickory wood.

A conversation is communication between multiple people.

You are a person, I am a person, others in the forum are people. We are communicating. Thus we are having a conversation.

To what do I protest? All of those dishes have very explicit definitions.

Yet they are completely misleading. How could one possibly know what bubble and squeak was from the meanings of their words.

We have distinguished between the two vastly different techniques commonly used, but for some reason you insist on blurring what has already been well defined by people who actually cook. Insisting we use a word in some "pure" sense is illogical when you yourself do not. Even your dictionary cannot rescue you from etymology. You must have a sacred fire pit to barbecue.

I kind of like doing this too. Sort of brings out the difference in the meats. I guess it's not not really the true best way to go, but it makes for interesting eating.

Of course, but two words of different meanings, when combined can form a new meaning independent of their original meaning. It's quite common. Let's take hot dog, for example. Obviously a hot dog is not a dog, nor is it necessarily hot, but when putting the two together a new meaning is formed, with a separate definition than the two works separate.

What I'm saying with regards to BBQ is that regardless of the original etymology of the word, the now globally accepted definition (as defined in English speaking dictionaries) is one more general than the original definition, though different people BBQ things differently in different parts of the world that doesn't make one a BBQ and one not. For example, in Japan people BBQ things in one manner, while in the USA another, that doesn't mean that the Japanese BBQ is not a BBQ and it doesn't mean that the USA BBQ is not a BBQ, it simply means that the word BBQ encompasses both.

BBQ is actually more of an acronym than a word. :colbert:

It's pretty easy to screw up a steak. Two things that kill it for me - overcooked (past med rare) and not rested (at least 10 mins for something in the 16oz range). I also really dislike when it's med rare in the very middle, but with a thick grey band around it. So many ways to get it wrong.

At home, I've perfected getting them just about edge to edge medium rare with a nice crust on the outside. Plus, my local Balducci's sells wagyu, so it's really tempting to spend $30 on the steak itself and do it at home.
