My suggestions:

Zaphod: Jim Carrey
Slartibartfast: Michael Palin
Trillian: Elizabeth Hurley
Go ahead and leave Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent, but make Ford Prefect: Matthew Broderick... would be cool.
Humma: Sorry.. Even John Malkovich sucked. Christopher Walken would've been better. ;)

She couldn't act. She'd be good in a supporting role in another movie, but her part was too big in this one and she blew the delivery of her lines.

I thought the acting was the only good thing about the movie. Mos Def was good, Sam Rockwell was very good, Zooey Daschell seemed to fit the part fine.

I just didn't find the movie particularly entertaining.

The acting was indeed horrible. I like your cast picks, but I think John Malkovich did a fine job, even if Walken could've done better.

The acting just really sunk the movie for me :(.

NO!
How would it have been if the whole cast of LOTR had been some famous hollywood stars? it would have been horrid, same with this movie
When you see a movie with a very famous actor you dont see for example the character Bob the Builder you see Joe Pesci.

And brittish humor requires brittish accents :)

haven't see the movie yet, and haven't decided if I should or not but...

Rockwell rocks, great overall actor! Zooey is just insatiably cute with that spunky brainy vibe (exactly how I pictured trillian). And Mos Def.... eh I don't know.

Umm... Neither Zaphod or Ford had an accent in the movie. And Elizabeth and Michael Palin DO have British accents.

IMHO, the movie was great EXCEPT for the acting. LOTR was fine on all fronts. HHGTG is going to flop because of bad acting if nothing else.

And yes, Zooey is "cute in a brainy kind of way." I'm not doubting that. But her acting sucked.

The hug thing made me laugh.

Mos Def had his moments. He was good with the "physical" acting, while not good with the delivery of lines.

Like, "Do you need a hug?"

and his reaction to the Pangalactic Gargleblaster.

The way he handled the Spatula creature with his towel.

He should have put more effort into his reaction to the Vogon poetry. If you've seen the TV series, you'd recall how Ford was REELING in pain at the sound of the poetry.
