I can't believe noone has said Pink Floyd yet.
Yes, Mr. Floyd has written some great lyrics 😉 (I assume you mean Roger Waters 🙂 )

"The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think. Oh by the way, which one's Pink?"

---

"So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze? Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground. What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here."

Which one is pink? 😕 😉 That is a cool lyric.
I guess I like Roger's lyrics but David singing them. 🙂

This list includes only the writers I can think of right now:
Ira Gershwin
Hammerstein
John Lennon
Paul McCarthney
Bob Dylan
Pete Townshend
Paul Simon
Neil Young
Judy Collins
Joni Mitchell
Cary Simon
Homer (as in the Iliad)

There's tons of great obscure artists, but from mainstreamers (that I haven't seen listed anyway) what about:

-Bob Marley
-Paul Simon
-Jim Morrison

Balladeers immediately come to my mind, but there's SO many of those. When I used to have cable I had a channel called TurnerSouth which had a show called "Live from the Bluebird Cafe" featuring songwriters and musicians from the Nashville area doing acoustic performances. There were some truly AMAZING lyricists on that show at times.

The answer is obviously 50 cent

I hate to admit it, but I guess fact is fact.

It's just that....some of the schmaltzy lyrics....BLEARGH.

I'm doing Cinderella right now and there is this interchange where Cinderella says she's afraid she'll wake up and find she is dreaming.
Prince Charming says "Are you sure you are asleep?"
She says something like "I know this is a dream."
And Prince says "Are you dreaming that I am about to kiss you?" and plants one on her!

LMAO. I can't WAIT to try THAT line in real life! 😉

Warren Zevon

You have got to be kidding.

Warren Zevon - Mohammed's Radio. "I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel, I was listening to the air conditioner hum. It went hmmmm, hmmmm hmmm hmmm hmm hmmm hmmm."

Warren Zevon - Play it all Night Long. "Daddy's doing sister Sally, Grandma's dying of cancer now...."

Warren Zevon - The Envoy. "Nuclear arms in the middle east, Israel's attacking the Iraqis, the Syrians are mad at the Lebanese and Baghdad does whatever she please, looks like another threat to world peace for the envoy..."

Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London. "Little Old Lady got Mutilated Late Last Night - Werewolves of London again." Perfect illiteration!!!

Bob Dylan
Roger Waters/David Gilmour (Neither is as good without the other)
Tori Amos
James Hetfield/Lars Ulrich
Dave Mustaine (Well, he used to be good)

Pity. More for me to love.

"Are you ready to do some of the good Lord's work? Well, I'm afraid you've come to the wrong place.
This is not the church of Jesus. This is not the church of Christ.
This is the church of Jesus fvcking Christ!
Can I get an amen?! Can I get a halleluiah? Can I get a Jesus fvcking Christ?
We're going to do a bit of healing today...."

I believe Roger Waters from Pink Floyd wrote the perfect lyric. It's the line right after he quietly whispers "watch out for that axe Eugene". "ah". That line pretty much sums up the plight of the world from the beginning of time. Of course his "one of these days I'm going to cut you into little peices" line is pretty good too. And um, no I'm not joking.

Listening to Warren Zevon now, thanks to this thread.

Pink Floyd (Waters/Gilmour)
Dire Straits (Mark Knoppfler)
Billy Joel
Bob Dylan
Simon & Garfunkle

Yes, 'One of these days' is an obscure but very excellent song. My favorite from Muddle for sure.
