I use USAA now and quite like them. No local offices though. Before USAA I used a local credit union and liked them too.

Just out of curiosity - what issues have you had with BOFA?
I have been their customer for almost 10 years now and never had any problems.

It has to do with their system and debit card use. I use my debit card allot on the weekends but the transactions don't process until Tuesdays ... usually. Even with the pending transactions, it seems they purposely delay the transaction to try to trap you into an overdraft thus hitting you with a $10 dollar overdraft protection fee. Or if you are short ( ballance ) a $35 dollar fee for every negative transaction that is pending.

BoA is Verizon's long lost twin. Charging for evey little damn thing, and getting very little in return. The BoA website is ok, once you manage to log in. Sovereign offers more general goodness too. My car loan is with Sov, and opening a checking account took off .5%, not much but more than BoA offers.

WAMU and/or a local credit union

My credit union offers lower or no fees, higher savings rates and friendly personalized customer service without speaking to a call center in BFE North Dakota.

Most credit unions don't offer 24/7 phone customer service or nationwide ATM locations but that can be dealt with.

Commerce Bank has a great debit card system with cash advance overdraft protection. If you overdraw they transfer fifty bucks from your credit account, which you'll pay like a normal credit bill. You can also check your current balance and available balance online. Debit transactions show up on available balance immediately, while credit purchases take a few days.

The only downside is that you have to open a credit account with commerce for the overdraft protection to work.

edit: After rereading your post, I guess the only advantage is that debit transactions are available online almost immediately and that cash advance fees are five bucks instead of ten.

A little on why:

- You can use any ATM and USAA will pay the ATM fee.
- Super nice customer support.
- Free checking account.
- I've never been charged a fee of any sort.
- I keep finding ways they make my life easier, like them giving me postage paid envelopes I can use to deposit checks - saves me a stamp every time!

Not everyone can join, though.
