Who composed the famous "Ave Maria" as we know it?

I said it was schubert....but a friend of mine swears its bach...a little research shows that there may have been multiple versions, but are these versions the same or just the same name but very different? For instance, who composed the version Celion Dion sings? I was under the impression that was the famous version...HELP classical/opera fans!

The lyric, usually in Latin or Italian is simply the Hail Mary, so the lyric itself dates back over 1000 years. It has been set to music hundreds of different ways. Some are more popular than others. I think the Schubert one is very common.

Hmm...well schuberts is german of course...doh, figures there is no easy answer
In keeping with the Church's officially recognized language being Latin, AFAIK, all of the masses that he wrote were in Latin. I don't think I've ever heard the Ave Maria in German. In fact, if it were in German, it would probably not be called Ave Maria 🙂
by the way...does Jzero stand for jizzmaster zero?
ROFLMAO! No, it's from a Cat Stevens song of the same name 🙂

Well its apparently sung in german based on this, at least sometimes anyways. Also, jizzmaster zero was a character in this movie. Although since he as a made up character played by "clark" in the movie, you wont see the name unless you read through the quotes section.
