Nice album, Jamie. That's a new feature of MS Front Page, eh?

What do you use for a flash, Alexandra? The EXIF says flash didn't fire on that football image, and I KNOW that's not true. That's a lot of camera to keep in the car all the time. I should get in the same habit. God knows there's enough unused cameras around here!

Hey Ornery! I use an old Vivitar 285HV Zoom Thyristor flash. It doesn't match up exactly with the electronics on the Digital Rebel, so I use an adaptor on the hotshoe of the camera and then because the weight of the flash in the adaptor can make it shaky on top of the camera, I use a side grip and put the flash on it's hotshoe and run a sync cord to the adapter on the camera's hotshoe. Then I have to shoot flash shots manually and that's why it doesn't show up on the readings for the photos.

My long lens just has an f stop of 3.5, but if I use the zoom at all on the football shots the best I can get is usually a 4 or 4.5, so I just adjust the shutter speed for the distance I think I'll be from the shot and hope for the best. I've had the flash for so long that I know it's reach pretty well and can adjust for it when the play comes my way, but when a good play heads toward the other side of the field it's a real bummer.

I'm saving up for f/2.8 long lens, but I guess I'll just have to settle for good shots on my side of the field until then. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to use some of my lens funds to get a f/2.8 or f/1.8 70mm lens. I'm thinking I could still get some good midfield shots with one of those and then crop them in PhotoShop to get a good picture, but I don't know if I'd still be able to get the detail I want out of them. What do you think?

Oh, and I do get a little nervous having all the camera equipment in the car so much of the time, but I got it all insured right down to the camera bag, so that helps some. 🙂

Hey cool, I think my dad is going to the same air show tomorrow!

It just sucks that the only lens I have for this camera is the 18-55mm XT kit lens, which can't shoot planes for crap.

You are asking the WRONG guy. I've got credit cards, and if I want something bad enough I use it! I'd buy the best bang for the buck lens I could get my hands on, and as bright as possible. Years down the road, the extra bucks it cost won't mean squat, but you'll still have a quality lens to enjoy forever more. 🙂

It can certainly shoot the ones on the ground, so concentrate on those.

My son saw a sign by one of the jets that said, "No Smoking". There was a serviceman standing next to it... smoking. 😛 He said that's the only shot he regrets not getting.

Ornery, I've thought about taking the plunge, but sometimes that old credit card gets stuck in the billfold and I have a really hard time pulling it out. Especially when I think about the fact that since we haven't had a raise in 3 years there's been talk of a possible strike if we don't get one when the legislature meets next month. The last and only time we went on strike was in '90 or '92 for a little over two weeks. I didn't have many bills to pay then so losing a paycheck or two didn't hurt that much. Now though, I think I'd kick myself for spending $900 - $1000+ on a non-essential item to add to the bills to have to catch up on after a strike.

If we get that raise next month I think I definitely will go for it. Of course, football season will probably be just about over before we know anything for sure. If we don't get the raise, but don't go on strike, I still may be able to pry the credit card out of the wallet, but the cashier may have to pry it the rest of the way out of my hand. 🙂 If we go on stike though, it'll probably be next football season before I can get the photos I want.
