What do you use for a flash, Alexandra? The EXIF says flash didn't fire on that football image, and I KNOW that's not true. That's a lot of camera to keep in the car all the time. I should get in the same habit. God knows there's enough unused cameras around here!
Hey Ornery! I use an old Vivitar 285HV Zoom Thyristor flash. It doesn't match up exactly with the electronics on the Digital Rebel, so I use an adaptor on the hotshoe of the camera and then because the weight of the flash in the adaptor can make it shaky on top of the camera, I use a side grip and put the flash on it's hotshoe and run a sync cord to the adapter on the camera's hotshoe. Then I have to shoot flash shots manually and that's why it doesn't show up on the readings for the photos.
My long lens just has an f stop of 3.5, but if I use the zoom at all on the football shots the best I can get is usually a 4 or 4.5, so I just adjust the shutter speed for the distance I think I'll be from the shot and hope for the best. I've had the flash for so long that I know it's reach pretty well and can adjust for it when the play comes my way, but when a good play heads toward the other side of the field it's a real bummer.
I'm saving up for f/2.8 long lens, but I guess I'll just have to settle for good shots on my side of the field until then. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to use some of my lens funds to get a f/2.8 or f/1.8 70mm lens. I'm thinking I could still get some good midfield shots with one of those and then crop them in PhotoShop to get a good picture, but I don't know if I'd still be able to get the detail I want out of them. What do you think?
Oh, and I do get a little nervous having all the camera equipment in the car so much of the time, but I got it all insured right down to the camera bag, so that helps some. 🙂
