A search in the archives yields the answer:

Forum member lupin was the first to mention the phrase as a TV show on October 22, 2000. (Thread link.)

(Someone buy lupin a  .)

DataFly listed TG as one of his favorite TV shows on 11/19/2000.

mAdD INDIAN was the FIRST to post a request for rips of the TV show on 12/10/2000. (Thread link.) (RegaPlanet provided the links.)

Viperoni posts a link to the TG review of the Audi RS4 on 3/1/2001.

yakko listed TG Magazine as one of his favorite magazines on 3/18/2001.

NFS4 broke his wookie when he lost his 12-minute-long McLaren F1 review along with other car movies, thus prompting his request for more TG movies. That was 12/10/2001.

(Very little mention of TG for over a year!)

GTaudiophile mentioned working as a Top Gear driver as his ideal dream job on 2/1/2004. (Thread link.)

NFS4 officially brings TG back to ATOT with a bang on 5/13/2004 by posting a link to the Lotus Exige [Elise] vs Apache Longbow Gunship vid. (Thread link.)

(The rest is history we all know by now!)

I'm not sure how accurate that is, since there's a lot of us who have hosted and linked videos of Top Gear shootouts and test drives w/o mentioning Top Gear in the thread titles...

You'd have to check the car threads from back then.

The oldest Top Gear shootout that I can think of is from the '80s, comparing the RX-7 to the 924 (I think).

I might be able to capture it, but it would be analog quality. I'd have to re-install my TV-Tuner card :)

Thanks for the offer ndee. Don't worry about it, VUK and the crew usually take care of it. They usually get the hi-def signal.

Those bastards better not screw up the recording for the season premiere...

I have my Sky Digital back now, so I'd be getting an excellent signal. However, I haven't the cash to build my HTPC yet :p

Still, if I do, you guys will be the first to get the episode.

Isn't the recorded quality pretty poor?

He gets it from VUK.

VUK records and encodes it, uploads it to ViperBond, and then ViperBond torrents it.

Now THERE's something I'd like to see...imagine, a MAZDA being compared to a PORSCHE!!

noobs.. i used to be TG fan back in 1990's. I was well aware of TG far before the first RS4 video.

I must have mentioned it back then, but who cares. I win. So buy me a
