Whiteout! Colorado blizzard pics

Pics taken with a Fuji F30 & Nikon D40.
We got stumped by about 3 feet of snow in the high county, and between 24 and 30 inches of snow in the Denver Metro area.

I have seen so many cars spinning out of control, truck/trailers stranded and jack-knifed on the highway, cars getting stuck in the snow and people walking on the highway/interstate after abandoning their cars. It was pretty crazy due to the high gust winds (50mph) dumping tons of snow very and blowing snow that has already been plowed.

I think the most dangerous places were highway ramps that were uphill with a slight curb incline on the inside. I have seen many trucks down the ditch and rolled over on those ramps. You couldn't drive around unless you had chains or ice tyres on your vehicle.

Yes, it was bad 😉

hehe...that's smack in the middle of downtown! 🙂 Looks like 16th St Mall and 17th St...

It was 70 degrees here today and beautiful. My wife and I took the Lotus down the coast and went to lunch at this little place right on the beach. Man, what a perfect day!

ive seen snow, but never been in a place where it was piled that high in a city. i feel bad for people who were affected or hurt by it, but it sure does look like fun to a southern californian

Not at all...

I've driven mine all these years in NH weather. If you get a set of GOOD winter tires, throw a little weight in the back, and drive carefully, it's possible to get around fine in even nasty storms. I put a set of narrower than stock Blizzak WS-50's on my stock 16" rims, made a winter set, and I was fine year after year. You have a standard IIRC, so that makes it even easier to drive. One trick...start off in second.

If you try to use the Z or V rated summer tires they come with in the snow...forget it.

My new car has AWD but summer only tires. If we get snow around here this winter, I'll take the stang with the snows and leave the new one home.

🙂

Edit:

Also, with RWD, it's easier to turn out of a skid because your drive wheels aren't also your steering wheels.

that doesn't look like anything. poor driving and interstate design FTL.

Yeah but if could of seen how windy it was you would think different. You were lucky if you could see 10 ft in front of you.

30-40MPH winds + 1" of snow per hour isn't a bad storm eh?

What made the blizzard really bad were the winds. The snow was falling already fast enough, but the snow plowers couldn't actually keep up with the winds. As soon as the snow gets plowed on the side of the roads, it would get pushed back on by the winds.

I think the weather in Colorado doesn't warrant the use of snow tyres. Believe it or not, but those type of blizzard condition are atypical of Colorado. We usually have very mild winters, and the heavy snow falls don't usually happen until springs. By that time of the year, the snow melts within one or two day after snowfall. The road are almost always clear, at least in the metro area. It's another story in the mountains. Personally, I just use all season tyres as winter tyres are too expensive for the type of driving conditions we have here. I just sipe the tyres for some extra traction in the wet or snow.

God DAMN that's a lot of fuggin' snow!

Yeah, and we are getting hit by another snow storm today too!
It's been snowing since yesterday afternoon, but it's not as bad as it was last week. I think we are getting away we maybe 12 inches of snow only. Perfect powder for snowboarding 😀

Here's another quick random shot I took the other day.
